Biography

Prof. Zhou teaches periodontics and dental implantology, perio-orthodontic interdisciplinary treatment to dental students, and residents in Periodontics and Orthodontics programs. Prof. Zhou is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He is an active member of American Academy of Periodontics, American Association of Orthodontists, and American Dental Association. He recieved a Doctor of Dental Surgery, Doctorate and Certificate in Orthodontics West China University of Medical Sciences. He recieved a Certificate in Periodontics from Medical College of Georgia. Prof. Zhou remains active in private practice. He joined the university in 2015.

    Research Projects

    Pathogenesis of Periodontal Diseases

    To identify and characterize the novel molecules involved in the crosstalk of skeletal system and immune system; To explore the mechanism of the periodontal diseases initiation, development, and progress; To seek potential treatment modalities by regulating host immune response and periodontal bone loss.

    Periodontal risks of Orthodontic Treatment

    To utilize digital and CBCT approaches to analyze the pathologic, anatomic, and biomechanical risks of orthodontic treatment; Clinical studies of treatment outcome of different periodontal surgeries to facilitate orthodontic treatment. To test the effect of tissue graft materials, growth factors, and stem cells approaches on craniofacial and periodontal regeneration; Focus on using periodontal regenerative therapy to treat orthodontic high-risk patients.

    Effects of Cannabis Consumption on Oral Health

    To study the role of cannabis on oral health and to explore the molecular mechanism of its action, etc.
