Biography

Sarah Markel is an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Detroit Mercy, bringing extensive practitioner experience into the classroom. She is a retired Detroit police detective with more than 25 years of law enforcement service, including 11 years as a detective specializing in criminal investigations, cybercrime and the forensic extraction and analysis of mobile and electronic devices.

Markel integrates real-world investigative experience into her teaching, emphasizing applied learning, digital evidence handling and contemporary challenges in technology-driven crime. She is extensively trained and certified in industry-leading digital forensic tools and remains current with emerging technologies and investigative methods. She has also been recognized as an expert witness in mobile device forensic extraction and analysis in federal, circuit and district courts.
