The African American Studies Scholarship Fund, awarded to students with a minor in AAS, was created to celebrate the academic achievements of AAS minors who often go on to make positive impacts in their communities and the country at large.

This award is also a marker of historical and institutional history that serves as a tool for recruiting new students, retaining them, and continuing the program's expansion. This award was an initiative of Justin Williams, Associate Professor of History and Director of the African American Studies Program Director at University of Detroit Mercy.
