Rx for Reading Detroit

Rx for Reading Detroit is a nonprofit literacy initiative sponsored by University of Detroit Mercy. Since 2014, we have distributed over 275,000 new and gently used books to low-income children and families, and Detroit Mercy undergraduates have read with hundreds of preschoolers and elementary students in Metro Detroit. Our mission is to expand access to high-quality children's books and support low-income families in reading with their children. Our vision is to help eliminate the opportunity gap by ensuring universal access to age-appropriate reading material.
Rx for Reading was founded on the basic principle that EVERY child has the right to read. Committed to the belief that "it takes a village to raise a child," our approach is one of community-based collaboration. We have partnered with over 100 community organizations committed to incorporating literacy into their own work for children and families. Our partners include low-income health clinics, Head Start programs, homeless shelters and churches.
