Healthcare Operations Management (BS)

Program Description

The Healthcare Operations Management (HOM) program is an innovative program designed to prepare individuals for success and growth in entry-level healthcare professional positions. The  program was designed based on feedback from experts in industry and created to  prepare graduates to address current trends in organizations and healthcare delivery. Two concentration tracks are designed into the program: a Digital Health track and Population Health track.  Students will have at least one course in each track with an option for three additional courses in their desired concentration. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Operations Management.

The HOM program consists of the following components: (1) Detroit Mercy Core Curriculum (2) the Healthcare Operations Management major requirements: 54 credit hours of major courses, 9 credit hours in an HOM area of concentration, and 15 credit hours of supportive courses (3) Electives: students may also need to take several electives (up to 9) to satisfy and reach the minimum graduation credit hour requirement of 120. 

Practical application opportunities through a capstone course and a three-credit internship are included in the HOM curriculum. These courses allow students to apply theory and skills learned throughout  program.  Students also learn networking skills and are exposed to potential employment opportunities.  

The Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Operations Management degree is offered in a variety of formats that include classes online and hybrid as well as afternoons and evenings to meet the needs of adults living and working in the metropolitan area.  All class formats may not be available each semester for every course.  Students are expected to complete their degree within 10 years. Healthcare Operations Management courses that are more than 10 years old must be repeated.

    Admission Criteria

    To be admitted to the Healthcare Operations Management program, applicants must meet the entrance requirements of the University. In addition, to gain acceptance to the program students must fulfill the following criteria:

    Freshmen

    First-time college students must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.50 and have completed two years of high school mathematics with a grade of C or higher. Scores on the College Entrance Examination Board (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) will also be examined but could be optional. High school graduates who are properly prepared to undertake the Healthcare Operations Management program should have a college preparatory program as outlined in the “Recommended High School Preparation” section of this catalog under “Admission to the University.”

    Transfer

    Transfer students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.00 and must complete Detroit Mercy placement tests in English composition and mathematics. Satisfying the MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement) at a Michigan community college may shorten your list of core requirements at Detroit Mercy.

    Academic Standards and Handbook

    Students in the Healthcare Operations Management program must attain a minimum grade of “C” or better in all HOM courses and required courses MTH 1010 (or higher), STA 2250, BIO 1090, and ETH 3580.  In addition, students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average.  The academic policies in the Student Handbook govern academic conduct, progression, withdrawal and dismissal.

    * Internship hours may require students to be available during “business hours”. Students should plan schedules accordingly this semester/course. Students must be registered in the internship course within the same semester they are participating in the internship experience. Students who are terminated from their internship site at the request of their onsite preceptor for any reason will receive a grade of "F" for the internship course, which counts as an "F" in the GPA. They will be required to repeat the internship course. The previous hours onsite will not count toward completion of the required internship hours.

    Concentration track courses - 9 credits

    Each student must also complete 9 credit hours in an HOM concentration area. This concentration track is in addition to the elective credits (up to 9) that may be required to complete 120 credit hour degree requirement. A student may choose either the Population Health Track or the Digital Health Track. Your concentration must be officially declared and on your academic record. Ask an advisor for details.

    A minimum of 120 total credit hours is required for graduation.

    University Core Curriculum

    All undergraduate degree students at Detroit Mercy are required to fulfill the objectives of the University's Core Curriculum. The curriculum consists of courses designed to meet objectives that ensure that students receive an overall education consistent with the mission of the University.     A minimum of 120 total credit hours is required for graduation with an HOM degree.

    Electives

    Students may need to complete additional electives in order to reach the minimum total required credits of 120. HOM 3700 is an optional elective typically offered once a year.
