Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
The University of Detroit Mercy, through its Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, complies with the U.S. Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care And Use Of Laboratory Animals. The original Policy was promulgated in 1986 to implement the Health Research Extension Act of 1985 (Public Law 99-158). It was updated in March, 1996. The Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) at the National Institutes of Health, which has responsibility for the general administration and coordination of the Policy on behalf of the PHS, provides specific guidance, instruction, and materials to institutions which must comply with the Policy. A key document utilized by the Committee is the Guide For The Care And Use Of Laboratory Animals (HHS, NIH, Pub. No. 86-23). The Policy pertains to the utilization and care of all vertebrate animals used in teaching, testing, and research. In addition to semiannual meetings to review all aspects of its work, the Committee meets whenever needed to review and pass judgement on protocols submitted by any and all members of the University involved in teaching and/or research projects which utilize vertebrate animals.
The University of Detroit Mercy is in full compliance with all government regulations pertaining to the care and use of vertebrate animals in all of its teaching and research facilities. The most recent government approval of its Assurance was granted in early 2002 and now extends to June of 2007.
