Information for Newly Admitted International Students

Congratulations on your acceptance to University of Detroit Mercy. The staff in the International Services Office is looking forward to meeting you and working with you throughout your stay. Students with F-1 (Student) visa

    Apply for a student visa

    If you have not already read about the student visa via the U.S. Department of State website, now is a good time to do so. You will not only learn many important details on the student visa, you will also learn what you must take to the Embassy after you pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, which should be the first thing that you do before scheduling and appearing for an appointment at a U.S. Embassy. A good resource to learn what the U.S. Consulates assess to determine if a student visa may be granted, visit the NAFSA: Association of International Educators website.

    If a visa is issued, it will be marked "University of Detroit Mercy." If you enter the U.S. using the I-20 for the University of Detroit Mercy, you are expected to report to the International Services Office no later than (and up to 30 days before) the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20. You will also be expected to attend the program for which your I-20 was issued for at least one semester.

    Arranging for housing

    University-sponsored housing is only available on the Detroit Mercy McNichols Campus, and we can only house admitted students. If you plan to live on the McNichols Campus, you are strongly advised to make arrangements for housing before you arrive.

    Applications for housing should be submitted online for the Fall (late August) Term no later than July 14; for the Winter (January) Term, no later than December 1; and for the May Term, no later than April 7. All applications will be processed and students who submit a residence hall contract will be expected to live in the halls for the academic year. If you have questions about on-campus housing before your arrival to Detroit Mercy, contact the International Admissions Counselor. If you plan to move into your dorm on campus prior to the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20, let your admissions counselor know in as much advanced time as possible so your housing on campus may be ready for your arrival.     While Detroit Mercy cannot and does not endorse off-campus housing, if you plan to or need to seek off-campus housing (perhaps because you have family coming to the U.S. with you), you may wish to search for local places to stay before searching for an apartment or house to rent.

    If you plan to live on campus and to purchase food at the Detroit Mercy dining facilities, plan to have some cash available to pay per diem for food and housing before your semester begins: August 28 for Fall, January 8 for Winter, and May 7 for spring/summer. Student athletes may contact their coach for additional details.

    Make financial arrangements

    You need to bring enough money to cover at least your first semester’s expenses. Using the financial charts, locate the chart that refers to your program of choice and bring half the total amount. Use traveler’s checks for your living expense amount; either traveler’s checks or a bank check (preferably issued by a U.S. bank in your country) for your tuition amount. If you plan to live on campus and to purchase food at the Detroit Mercy dining facilities, plan to have some cash available to pay per diem for food and housing before your semester begins: August. 8 for Fall, January 8 for Winter, and May 7 for spring/summer. Student athletes may contact their coach for additional details.

    When you attend the International Student Orientation (which is usually a day or so after the scheduled report date to the University; item No. 5 on Page 1 of the I-20), you will be shown how to open a bank account while attending Detroit Mercy. Finally, wiring money to the U.S. before you arrive is discouraged as it may cause difficulties or delays.

    Plan for your travel to Detroit Mercy

    You must arrive in the U.S. no later than the date on which you are expected to report to the school (item #5 on your I-20). You may enter the U.S. no more than 30 days before your reporting date. Again, if you plan to move into your residence hall on campus prior to the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20, let your admissions counselor know in as much advanced time as possible so your housing on campus may be ready for your arrival.

    Carry your I-20, your passport and your airline ticket together when you travel. On the plane, you will be given an I-94 (Admission/Departure) card to fill out. When you enter the U.S., the customs officer will stamp the I-94 card with the date and place of entry and return the card to you. The card will be marked “D/S” (duration of status), which means that, as long as you do not violate the terms of your F-1 status, you may remain in the U.S. until your program is completed. The inspector will also stamp Page 1 of your I-20 and return the document to you.

    If you have not yet taken the time to review the EducationUSA Website, now is a good time to do that. Try to arrange for someone to meet you at the airport when you arrive. If no one is available, the most convenient way to get to campus is by taxi or shuttle service. Depending on which port of entry you use to enter the U.S., staff at the airport can provide you information on transportation services leaving the airport. If you will arrive at Detroit Metro Airport, here is information on their transportation services. Finally, never ride in any car not clearly marked with a company name or with the word Taxi or Cab.

    Arriving on campus

    Now that you have been admitted to Detroit Mercy as a transfer student on an F-1 visa, understand that a major purpose of the ISO is to assess your English proficiency level to ensure as best we can that you will have no unnecessary difficulty in your academic coursework due to poor English comprehension and conversational abilities. Therefore, we expect you to either show satisfactory English language proficiency according to the criteria established by our University as indicated on Detroit Mercy's website by presenting an official TOFEL or IELTS score report to ISO when you report to ISO or you will be asked to take an ESL placement test during ISO International Student Orientation.

    If you submitted documentation to the admissions counselor prior to your admissions that indicated you met one of the criteria outlined on the Detroit Mercy website or, if you bring passing TOEFL or IELTS scores to the campus with you when you report to ISO, you will be exempt from taking the ESL placement test. Otherwise, we will provide you the required English proficiency testing via the ACT Compass ESL test and register you to the American Language and Culture Program according to the test results.

    Orientation and activities

    Every semester, ISO sponsors an International Student Orientation that all international students are required to attend. Detailed ISO International Student Schedule will be posted once it is finalized.

    Maintaining your status

    While you may already be familiar with the immigration rules governing your F-1 student visa, as a refresher, before you come to Detroit Mercy to begin your education, you should take some time to become familiar with what you will have to do to maintain your immigration status. In short, to maintain your F-1 status, you will be required to enroll in a full course of study throughout your program. A full course of study is defined as 12 credit hours for undergraduate (bachelor’s degree and post-degree) students and nine credit hours for graduate (Master’s or doctoral degree) students. You must be enrolled full-time in the Fall (late August) and Winter (January) terms each academic year. Summer is normally a vacation term. However, if you begin your studies in May, you must be full-time that summer only. You will receive detailed information on this and other immigration requirements at the orientation session.

    Students who are informed are not likely to experience significant difficulties with immigration requirements. Please remember that the staff at the International Services Office will be available to provide information and assistance to you throughout your stay at Detroit Mercy.     Buying health insurance and TB skin testing

    International students are required to purchase the University’s health insurance coverage unless they can present proof of current insurance coverage under one of the following: 1) government-sponsored insurance from one of the following countries: Botswana, Canada, Kuwait, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia or UAE; 2) insurance through a spouse’s U.S. employer.

    If you believe you have current eligible alternate coverage, please be prepared to present your insurance card or other document from the insurance company at check-in. The ISO will determine eligibility of alternate coverage. Students who purchase the University’s health insurance plan will be billed for the premium by the Student Accounting office at a later date. More detailed information is available at check-in.

    Finally, the University requires international students (except those born and raised in Canada) to have a TB skin test performed at the Detroit Mercy Health Center when they arrive on campus. You will receive further information on this when you report to ISO.

Nonimmigrant status students other than F-1

    Information for students in B-1/B-2 or F-2 status

    Before enrolling in a degree program at the University, you must either leave the U.S. to apply through the U.S. Embassy in your home country for a student (F-1) visa, or you must seek a Change of Status to F-1 with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) while in the U.S. If you choose to try the latter approach, the Detroit Mercy Foreign Student Advisor will assist you in the application process for the Change of Status to F-1 with the USCIS.

    Either way, before you may be issued an I-20 by the International Admissions Counselor, you must provide evidence of sufficient funds to support your studies for at least two consecutive full-time semesters at the University, including living expenses. The required amount must be verified by the International Admissions Counselor. You may not begin your studies at the University until you have either been granted F-1 visa status through a U.S. Embassy in your home country or you have been granted a Change of Status to F-1 visa status by the USCIS.

    Primary Visa (for example, TN and H-1B)

    Now that you have been admitted to Detroit Mercy on a non-immigrant primary visa other than F-1 (but not B-1), you may make an advising and registration appointment with an academic advisor. It is requested that, prior to enrolling in your courses, you report to Detroit Mercy's International Services Office (ISO) so we may know of your attendance at Detroit Mercy. The ISO is located on the ground floor of the Reno Hall Building on the McNichols Campus. You may come between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For a map of the McNichols Campus and directions, click hereBring your current visa, passport, and I-94 card. We will photocopy your immigration documents and take your picture for our records. You will sign up for the University’s required health insurance plan (if needed).

    Dependent Visa (for example, TD and H-4)

    Now that you have been admitted to Detroit Mercy on a non-immigrant dependent visa other than B-2 or F-2, the first thing that you need to do is to report to Detroit Mercy's International Services Office (ISO) so we may know of your attendance at Detroit Mercy. The ISO is located on the ground floor of the Reno Hall Building on the McNichols Campus. You may come between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For a map of the McNichols Campus and directions, click here. Bring your current visa, passport, and I-94 card. We will photocopy your immigration documents and take your picture for our records. You will sign up for the University’s required health insurance plan (if needed).

    Also, understand that a major purpose of the ISO is to assess your English proficiency level to ensure as best we can that you will have no unnecessary difficulty in your academic coursework due to poor English comprehension and conversational abilities. Therefore, we expect you to either show satisfactory English language proficiency according to the criteria established by our University as indicated on Detroit Mercy's website, or we provide the required English proficiency testing via the ACT Compass ESL test.

    If you submitted documentation to the admissions counselor prior to your admissions that indicated you met one of the criteria outlined on the Detroit Mercy website or, if you bring passing TOEFL or IELTS scores to the campus with you when you report to ISO, you will be immediately allowed to meet with an academic advisor to register for academic coursework. Otherwise, we will provide you the required English proficiency testing via the ACT Compass ESL test and register you according to the test results.

F-1 status transfer students

    Transfer students (F-1 visa holders) within the United States

    If you already have an F-1 visa and wish to transfer from another U.S. university to University of Detroit Mercy, you must first request a Transfer Information Release Form from the University of Detroit Mercy by emailing Veronica Beltran at beltrave@udmercy.edu. Once you fill out the Detroit Mercy Transfer Information Release Form, you will need to send this form to the foreign student advisor at your current school to inform them of your intention to transfer to Detroit Mercy. If you are eligible to transfer per immigration regulations, your university will release your F-1 record to Detroit Mercy. Detroit Mercy will then issue you a new I-20 when you arrive to attend the Detroit Mercy International Student Orientation. If you plan to travel outside the U.S., you will notify both your current university and our university's Admissions Office, we will issue the I-20 before your departure for you to schedule an appointment with the U.S. Embassy at your home country. Students who wish to transfer to Detroit Mercy must also submit a bank statement and a sponsor form if someone other than yourself is sponsoring you.

    Important note: If you plan to travel outside of the U.S. after finishing your studies and before beginning classes at Detroit Mercy, you will need to obtain an I-20 from Detroit Mercy before departing from the U.S. When you reenter the U.S., you must present the I-20 issued by Detroit Mercy to the immigration officer at the port of entry. Do not reenter the U.S. using the I-20 from your former school. Please inform ISO of your travel plans well in advance of your departure date to ensure timely issuance of the I-20 from Detroit Mercy.

    Please note that you are required to report to Detroit Mercy's International Services Office (ISO) when you are no longer attending classes and within 15 days of the beginning of the term at Detroit Mercy to sign your Detroit Mercy I-20 and so that we may make copies of your visa, passport, and I-94 card, as well as sign you up for the University’s required health insurance plan, if needed (read more on this below). Canadian citizens

    Apply for an I-94/Student Visa

    Before you schedule an interview appointment with a U.S. Embassy in Canada (required of Canadian Legal Permanent Residents) or before you visit a Port of Entry (POE) to the U.S. (an option for Canadian Citizens), all international students coming from Canada must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee.

    Canadian legal permanent residents may schedule an appointment at a U.S. Embassy in Canada and learn what is required for the visa application process by visiting The U.S. Visa Service Website. Canadian Citizens who choose to go to a POE (whether the Windsor/Detroit POE or the Sarnia/Port Huron POE), should call ahead to verify hours and verify needed materials for the visit. Generally, these will be your receipt for SEVIS fee payment; your I-20; your valid passport; a 2x2 photograph of yourself; transcripts from all previously attended schools; and evidence of financial support for your studies.

    The inspecting officer will stamp Page 1 of the I-20 and return the document to you. The officer will also issue you an I-94 card indicating the date you were admitted to the U.S. (including a student visa if you are a Canadian landed immigrant). For full-time international students, the card will be marked with D/S (duration of status), which means that, as long as you maintain your F-1 status, you may remain in the U.S. or reenter the U.S. after a temporary absence of no more than five months.

    Part-time border commuter students in F-3 status are not admitted for D/S but are, instead, issued a new I-20 for each new semester or term of attendance at the school. You will need to present an updated letter from your bank to the Detroit Mercy Foreign Student Advisor (FSA) prior to being issued a new I-20 for each term of attendance at Detroit Mercy. You should plan to meet with the FSA immediately after registering for your classes each term. In either case, if you will be commuting between Detroit Mercy and your home in Canada, you will need to present your stamped I-20 and the I-94/visa each time you cross the border to attend Detroit Mercy.

    If you enter the U.S. using an I-20 for University of Detroit Mercy, you are expected to report to the International Services Office no later than (and up to 30 days before) the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20. You will also be expected to attend the program for which your I-20 was issued for at least one semester.

    Initial entry to the U.S.

    NOTE: If you are a Canadian Citizen, while you may be advised and registered for your classes prior to receiving an I-20 from Detroit Mercy, on the very first day that you enter the U.S. with your stamped I-20 and I-94 during the permitted entry period (up to 30 days prior to and no later than the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20), you must report to Detroit Mercy's International Services Office (ISO) so that we may make copies of your I-20, passport, I-94 (and student visa if issued), and so that we can sign the 3rd page of the I-20 — which is very important if you are a commuter student, whether full or part time. The ISO is located on the ground floor of the Reno Hall Building on the McNichols Campus. You may report to the ISO between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For a map of the McNichols Campus and directions, click here. You will be given information about the International Student Orientation program that you must attend.

    As a freshman student, you need to register to attend one of Detroit Mercy's Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) sessions. Since SOAR sessions are scheduled prior to the 30-day entry period on an I-20, you must cross the border to attend SOAR as a visitor to the U.S. As a transfer or graduate student, you will be advised and registered for your classes by making an individual advising and registration appointment with an academic advisor. If your individual advising and registration appointment is scheduled prior to your receiving an I-20, cross the border as a visitor to the U.S.

    NOTE: If you are a legal permanent resident of Canada whose native language is not English, on the very first day that you enter the U.S. with your stamped I-20, I-94, and visa during the permitted entry period (up to 30 days prior to and no later than the date as indicated at item No. 5 on Page 1 of your I-20), you must report to Detroit Mercy's International Services Office (ISO) so that we may make copies of your I-20, passport, I-94 (and student visa if issued), and so that we can sign the 3rd page of the I-20 — which is very important if you are a commuter student, whether full- or part-time.     Departure and reentry to the U.S. on an F-Status

    Once you have entered the U.S. in F-1 (F-3 for part-time border commuter students) status, you cannot reenter the country after a temporary absence unless an authorized staff member in the International Services Office at Detroit Mercy has certified that you are in valid status by signing Page 3 of your I-20 form. You can obtain this signature when you check in at the International Services Office. If you travel frequently, you should obtain a new signature at the beginning of each subsequent term. You should also obtain a signature before leaving for summer vacation so that you will have no problems at the border when you reenter for the fall term.

As for the temperature throughout the year, in general, be prepared for changeable weather. You will need some lightweight clothing for summer (June 20 to September 22) since the weather is usually quite warm (22-23 degrees Celsius). Winters (December 21 to March 20) can be quite cold, around 0 degrees Celsius or below. During this season, you will need a warm coat or jacket as well as boots, a hat, and gloves. Spring (March 20 to June 20) and fall (September 22 to December 21) are generally cool, so it is a good idea to have a light jacket or a sweater for these seasons.     NOTE: Part-time border commuter students in F-3 status are not permitted to live in the U.S. while attending school on a part-time basis. This is a part of the immigration regulations established for the F-3 "visa."

    Tuberculosis (TB) skin test

    The University requires all international students have a TB skin test performed at the University Health Center when they arrive on campus. Students born and raised in Canada may present evidence of a TB test performed within the last 12 months in lieu of the test administered by the University. Bring the test results (if applicable) to the ISO when you report to campus.

    Maintaining your status

    Before you come to the United States and begin your education at Detroit Mercy, you should take some time to become familiar with what you will have to do to maintain your immigration status. In short, to maintain your F-1 status, you will be required to enroll in a full course of study throughout your program. A full course of study is defined as 12 credit hours for undergraduate (bachelor’s degree and post-degree) students and nine credit hours for graduate (master’s or doctoral degree) students. You must be enrolled full time in the Fall (September) and Winter (January) terms each academic year. Summer is normally a vacation term. However, if you begin your studies in May, you must be full time that summer only. You will receive detailed information on this and other immigration requirements at the orientation session.

    Part-time border commuter students in F-3 status must maintain consistent course attendance in their part-time coursework and maintain satisfactory grades required by the Grading Standards for the Program, as well as adhere to all regulations for an F-3 visa.

    Students who are informed are not likely to experience significant difficulties with immigration requirements. Please remember that the staff at the International Services Office will be available to provide information and assistance to you throughout your stay at Detroit Mercy.
