  • Student Organization Leadership Conference set for Nov. 9

    Join us for a full day of leadership development, connection and fun! The Student Org Leadership Conference will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Student Union Ballroom and is designed to support and empower student leaders across campus. This year, we’re excited to announce a student orgs Blackboard platform, where students will have access to resources and event postings.   • Guest from Tanzania to give online talk about Ujamaa and Ignatian Values, Nov. 13

    Join us Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. for an online discussion about Ujamaa, an ideology of self-reliance, response to colonialism and attitude of mind that formed the basis of African socialism under J.K. Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president after the country’s independence.

    Joseph Albert, coordinator for international programs and instructor at Loyola High School, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, will discuss the basis for this movement and how Ujamaa functions in Tanzanian society today, connecting it to Ignatian philosophy and practices.

    This livestreamed talk, hosted by Detroit Mercy’s African American Studies Program and sponsored by College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) and Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive (CLASA), is free and open to the University community and public. Opening reflections will be given by Fr. Charles Oduke, director of Mission Integration.

    Please join Student Life and the Campus Activity Board to recognize Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11 at 11-11:45 a.m. in the Health Professions Building, Room 124.

    This event will recognize the contributions and sacrifices of those who have served to defend freedom, and includes individuals from the current Detroit Mercy Veteran Student Organization (UDMVSO). Gawana Mancil, current organization president, will discuss the importance of Veterans Day and how the UDMVSO impacts the students at Detroit Mercy.

    This event is open to any individual at Detroit Mercy. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Weekly Mass schedule

    In honor of International Education Week (Nov. 18-22), the International Services Office (ISO) will be hosting International Night on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom on the McNichols Campus.

  • Student auditions for two Theatre Company productions to be held Nov. 11-12

    Student auditions for Detroit Mercy Theatre Company‘s productions of “The Glass Menagerie” and “The Grown Ups” will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 11 and 12. The auditions are open to all students, whether majoring in theatre or not!

    The auditions are Monday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. inside of Reno Hall, Room 164. Callbacks will be the following evening, Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. 

    For the audition, please prepare one dramatic monologue that is 60-90 seconds in length.

    Character Breakdown — “The Glass Menagerie”

    • Laura Wingfield: Amanda’s daughter and Tom’s older sister. Laura has a bad leg, on which she has to wear a brace, and walks with a limp. Twenty-three years old and painfully shy, she has largely withdrawn from the outside world and devotes herself to old records and her collection of glass figurines.
    • Tom Wingfield: Amanda’s son and Laura’s younger brother. An aspiring poet, Tom works at a shoe warehouse to support the family. He is frustrated by the numbing routine of his job and escapes from it through movies, literature and alcohol.
    • Jim O’Connor: An old acquaintance of Tom and Laura. Jim was a popular athlete in high school and is now a shipping clerk at the shoe warehouse in which Tom works. He is unwaveringly devoted to goals of professional achievement and ideals of personal success.

    Character Breakdown — “The Grown Ups”

    • Lukas – (early 20s) is pumped to be back this summer.
    • Cassie – (early 20s) is excited to be joining this summer.
    • Becca – (early 20s) is honestly thrilled to be back this summer.
    • Maeve – (early 20s) is literally sooo jazzed to be back this summer you guys.
    • Aidan – (late 20s) has a lot of new responsibilities this summer.

  • AI Prompt-A-Thon 2024 Wrap-Up: A Global Success

    Photo of several students sitting at a table with laptops and notebooks out collaborating on a project at AI Promptathon.On Oct. 25-26, the AI Prompt-A-Thon 2024 brought together 257 participants—102 in person at the College of Health Professions and 155 online—from around the world to develop innovative AI solutions addressing urban health challenges. This multidisciplinary event united students from Health Services Administration, Computer Science, Data Analytics and more, showcasing the power of diverse perspectives in AI-driven problem-solving.

    With more than 70 projects submitted, 15 awards were presented across three categories: Text-to-Image, Text-to-Video and AI Chatbot Development. An additional three students won prizes in an interactive head-to-head Prompt Design Challenge.

    This event was an exciting, hands-on experience that not only strengthened participants’ AI skills, but also prepared them for a world where AI will play a pivotal role across industries. The AI Prompt-A-Thon 2024 provided a unique platform for collaboration across disciplines, demonstrating the power of bringing together students with different expertise to tackle shared challenges.

    Student Success and Academic Support

    Student Success Center

    The Student Success Center offers a testing center, tutoring and study groups, professional mentoring, athlete study table, placement testing, and more. Some of the programs listed below are also part of the Student Success Center.

    • Academic Interest and Major Exploration (AIME)- Developmental advising and peer mentoring to conditionally admitted students.

    • Student Accessibility Services- available to all currently enrolled students who have documented disabilities that substantially limit them in one or more major life activities. Individuals eligible for services may have, but are not limited to, the following types of disabilities: mobility, orthopedic, hearing, visual, learning, psychological and attentional.

    • KCP Program - Michigan students who can benefit from improving their academic skills. Professional, confidential academic support.

    • Personal Counseling - Professional outpatient counseling and psychotherapeutic treatment is available to students at no charge.

    • Tutoring Appointments - SSC offers free tutoring in most freshman and some upper-division courses, including math, chemistry, biology, languages, philosophy, history and English. Make an appointment.

    TRIO Student Support Services

    TRIO SSS is a federally funded program designed to provide underrepresented student populations. It provides assistance with scholarship applications, academic success planning, mentoring and more.

    The Writing Center

    Work on any stage of the writing process. with peer consultants. Review your assignments, drafts, instructor feedback and questions. Get support if English is not your first language.

    Work with your faculty advisor to reflect on your academic and career goals and to track your academic progress.
