Master of Arts in Economics

A Master of Arts in Economics offers a flexible program that can meet a wide range of needs, preparing graduates capable of initiating applied research and progression toward doctoral programs. Students have the opportunity to learn and apply economic and financial principles relating to the U.S., as well as international financial systems. Based upon a liberal arts foundation, the degree program also provides the student with a deeper knowledge and understanding of the history, institutions and forces at work in the world economy. The flexibility of the program allows the student to pursue either a more applied orientation in coursework that helps provide for a more practical orientation or a theoretical focus that is more of an academically oriented program.

The Master of Arts in Economics program prepares students for career advancement in the private sector (e.g., non-profit institutions, school systems, industry and financial institutions) as well as in diverse levels of government. As the globalization process accelerates, the demand for more advanced knowledge and abilities in the field of economics correspondingly increases. University of Detroit Mercy's Master of Arts in Economics program enables students to achieve a higher level of sophistication that the business world requires. The degree can also help prepare students for managerial advancement in the rapidly emerging international sector of the economy.

Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Economics program, students will have:

  • a working knowledge of how economics is woven into the fabric of institutions, industry and government;
  • an understanding of international economics and how it relates to the U.S. economy; and
  • a greater awareness of moral and ethical issues and principles as they relate to economic concepts, theories and realities.

    Degree Requirements - Master of Arts in Economics (30 credits)

    To obtain a Master of Arts in Economics, a candidate must successfully complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of required graduate-level economics courses. (A student completing a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics or Financial Economics from Detroit Mercy may not repeat an equivalent graduate course without the consent of the advisor or chairperson.)

    Curriculum

    Students will complete the following courses:

    Required Courses (15 credits)

    • ECN 5100 Economic Analysis of Enterprises (3 credits)
    • ECN 5120 Analysis of Economic Conditions (3 credits)
    • ECN 5150 Quantitative Foundations for Data Analysis (3 credits)
    • ECN 5400 Financial Economics (3 credits)
    • ECN 5650 Theory of International Trade (3 credits)

    Program Electives (15 credits)

    Students must take:

    *With the permission of the department chair, students can take one course in another discipline for career enhancement.

    Admission Requirements

    Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

    In order to be admitted to the Master of Arts in Economics program, an applicant must meet entrance requirements of Detroit Mercy. The applicant must also have completed a baccalaureate or advanced degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. In certain cases, additional prerequisites may be required.

    To provide greater convenience and flexibility, courses are available in different delivery options:

    • Traditional day and evening in-classroom format is offered at the McNichols Campus.
    • This program can be taken completely online.*

    Note: Students who take courses across delivery options may be charged tuition at the highest rate.
