Help for Flint, MI

UDM is partnering with Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Flint, Michigan and Detroit Sip (an officially designated Flint relief collection point.) We are collecting water and other needed supplies on March 19 and will deliver it on March 20.

The effort is being organized by the Student Life Office and the Student Social Workers Association. They will need help loading trucks on March 19 and taking the water and supplies to Flint on Sunday March 20. If you are able to help at either one, please click here. If you have any questions, contact Drew Peters petersas@udmercy.edu

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish also needs help every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 9am-6pm. They need help unloading trucks, working on their phone bank, or serving as a translators. They would appreciate any help you can provide, for whatever time you can offer. If you want to sign up, contact the Coordinator in Flint: Rick Vasquez 810-919-9133. If you have other questions, you can contact Veronica Beltran (Our contact here at UDM) beltrave@udmercy.edu or call 313-993-3310.

Detroit Prevention and Awareness in the Community

DPAC is a new student organization on campus that aims to spread awareness of sexual assault, dating violence and domestic violence and to inform the campus community of resources available for dealing with such situations. DPAC will put on various campus events to teach about the warning signs, severity, and proper responses to situations of sexual assault, dating violence and domestic violence as well as peer education groups led by students. Additionally, they are partnered with local agencies that provide support and services to victims of sexual assault, dating violence and domestic violence in order to connect student volunteers and university resources with community service opportunities.

DPAC is constantly looking for student volunteers to help with on campus and community events. If you are interested in applying, you can complete their online application. To find out more, please like our Facebook page or contact Marianne Grima at grimamr@udmercy.edu or call her at 734 718 1546.

Rx for Reading Detroit

Rx for Reading is a UDM literacy initiative that works to expand access to children's books and support families in reading with their children. Since 2014, they have distributed over 17,000 children's books and partnered with local schools and Head Start programs to read with over 150 kids in our community. Rx for Reading could not exist without UDM students who give their time, energy, and commitment to help distribute books to our community partners and spread the love of reading to kids in our city.
