  • Students: Did you know you could travel to China this summer to be an English language partner at the Summit Cambridge Language School? Come to an information session from 3 to 5 p.m. in Room 26 of Reno Hall and learn more from past participants of the program.
  • The Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive welcomes University of Houston Associate Professor of Social Work Dawn McCarty to speak on "The Immigrant Situation on Both Sides of the Texas-Mexico Border," from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 317 of the Jane & Walter O. Briggs Building. This event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, March 28

  • The Building Genuine Respect, Integrity and Trust (GRIT) sexual discrimination prevention campaign explores unhealthy communication in relationships and the use of comedy as means to reflect on the subject. Join GRIT for an information session from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the McNichols Campus Library Lobby.
  • Faculty/staff: Are you interested in or planning to submit a grant to the NIH? Want to learn more about the Biosketch requirement? Wayne State University Associate Provost for Scientific Training Workforce Development and Diversity Ambika Mathur will host a Biosketch workshop from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 131 of the Engineering Building. Register online.
  • Detroit Mercy School of Law hosts the annual McElroy Lecture, providing a forum for prominent thinkers and leaders to address fundamental issues of law and religion. This year's lecturer is University of Victoria Law School Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law John Borrows. Borrow will speak on the topic, "The Revitalization of Indigenous Spirituality: Court and Community Conflicts," at 5 p.m. in Room 326 on the Riverfront Campus.   • Student Life invites all Detroit Mercy women to celebrate at the annual Phenomenal Women's Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The Ashley Grey Legacy Award will be presented as well; see the event page for more information and to register.
  • As the concluding lecture of its 2018 Winter Lecture Series, Detroit Mercy School of Architecture (SOA) welcomes Melissa Dittmer of Bedrock Detroit at 5:30 p.m. in the Warren Loranger Architecture Building's Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center. This event is free and open to the public.
  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host a culture slam event for students from 7:10 to 9:10 p.m. in the Student Union Fountain Lounge. Enjoy all forms of ethnic foods, dances, games and music.

Thursday, March 29

  • Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the lunch and learn event, "Mandatory Reporting: I've Got this Covered; Just Tell me what to Say and Do," from noon to 1 p.m. in the Presidents' Dining Room in the Student Union. This session will provide role-play training for employees who have directly observed or learned of potential student or employee sexual harassment or misconduct.
  • Attention all interested faculty, staff and graduate students: Come to the next Women's Leadership Round Table from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 208 of the Student Union, featuring keynote speaker Katy Snyder, interim Dean for the College of Engineering & Science.   • There will be a Holy Thursday Mass at 4:30 p.m. in the Commerce & Finance Building's St. Ignatius Chapel.
  • Come and share in the conversation about our current agricultural crossroad at "The Future of Food: Lessons from African Smallholder Farmers." Northern Arizona University Professor Emerita of Political Science Carol Thompson will share how African smallholder farmers are successfully adapting to climate change by community participation in farmer field schools for seed breeding and seed saving. Monday, April 2

  • If you are healthy and able, consider donating blood to the Red Cross, which will be available between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Student Union's Fountain Lounge. Donated blood can help in treating patients suffering from cancer, bleeding disorders, chronic anemia associated with cancer, sickle cell anemia and other hereditary blood abnormalities.

Tuesday, April 3

  • Associate Professor of English Mary-Catherine Harrison will present the 2018 Last Lecture, titled, "Expanding Our Moral Circle, " from 4:15 to 6 p.m. in the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center of the Warren Loranger Architecture Building. The Last Lecture was reintroduced in November 2014 to honor a Mercy College of Detroit tradition. See the event page for more information.
  • The Detroit Mercy Arab Cultural Society is hosting a fundraising dinner to aid students in Iraq. Come join in the dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

Thursday, April 5

  • Students are encouraged to attend the lunch and learn event, "Can You Hear Me; Do you See Me: Bridging Communication Divides," from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Presidents' Dining Room. This interactive lecture and discussion centers on the significance of the #MeToo movement in university life.
  • The Department of Religious Studies presents the 11th annual Cushing Distinguished Lecture in Religious Studies, featuring Miguel de la Torre, Professor of Social Ethics and Latinx Studies at Iliff School of Theology. This year's lecture is titled, "Embracing Hopelessness," in the Student Union Grounds Coffeehaus. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m., with the lecture beginning promptly at 7 p.m.
  • CLASA presents the annual UCA Jesuit Martyrs Scholarship fundraiser dinner from 6:45 to 9 p.m. in the Student Union Fountain Lounge. This year's keynote speaker will be Francisco Mena Ugarte, director of CRISPAZ (Christians for Peace in El Salvador). Ugarte will share stories from his own life and explain how the UCA Jesuit martyrs and Dean Brackley S.J. inspired him. Students can attend for free; the Detroit Mercy community is asked to donate at least $10 to attend. Proceeds raised from the dinner go to Salvadorans families sending students to the University of Central America. Friday, April 6

  • Students: There will be a small group session open to anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of using a TitanCareerLink account. The session will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in Room 103 of Reno Hall. There will also be a small resume-building workshop available at the same time.
  • University of Detroit Mercy will welcome Professor Tiya Miles to campus to discuss and sign her latest book, The Dawn of Detroit: A Chronicle of Slavery and Freedom in the City of the Straights. This special engagement takes place at 5:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Building Room 114. See the news release for more information.
  • International Services and the Office of Student Life host a celebration of cultures at Detroit Mercy with food, performances and cultural conversations from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Saturday, April 7

  • University of Detroit Mercy will host the #HeeltheDivide walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the McNichols Campus; check-in begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Fountain Lounge. This walk focuses on women's rights, equality between sexes, alliances in the community and support services for Detroit residents. Contact the event coordinators at dpac@udmercy.edu to register.

The Complete History of America (Abridged) opens next week

The Detroit Mercy Theatre Company presents its closing production of the season, The Complete History of America (Abridged), April 6-22. Performances will be at The Marlene Boll Theatre at the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway, in downtown Detroit. The Complete History of America (Abridged) is a 90-minute romp of slapstick humor and breathlessly paced vaudevillian takes of our country's history.

The Complete History of America (Abridged) will have performances at 7:30 p.m. on April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, and 3 p.m. on April 8, 15 and 22. Nominations due for Mission Leadership Awards

On behalf of the Mission Effectiveness Team, nominations are now open for the two annual Mission Leadership Awards: the Vivere ex Missione ("to live the mission") and the Agere ex Missione ("to do the mission").

The Vivere ex Missione Award is an annual award presented to up to four graduating students who best exemplify the mission of University of Detroit Mercy. One qualified student will be selected from each of the following categories and the award will be presented at their respective commencement ceremony: McNichols undergraduate programs, McNichols graduate programs, the School of Law and the School of Dentistry.

The Agere ex Missione Award is presented annually to two individuals: a faculty member and either a staff member or administrator who exemplify the mission of University of Detroit Mercy. This award is presented at the President's Convocation, on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Specific criteria for the awards and additional information can be found online under the accordion, Mission Leadership Awards. Nomination letters should be submitted to Sr. Judy Mouch, RSM, co-chair of the Mission Effectiveness Team, at mouchj1@udmercy.edu by midnight on Sunday, April 1.

Keenan Appellate Competition winners named

The Keenan Appellate Competition is an annual tournament administered by Detroit Mercy Law's Moot Court Board of Advocates. The topic of the tournament is an issue taken from a case currently up for writ of certiorari before the Unites States Supreme Court or an issue that is generating attention among the federal circuits.

Professors of Chemistry & Biochemistry Mark Benvenuto and Matthew Mio, Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry Klaus Friedrich, Chemistry Storeroom Manager Meghann Murray and several chemistry students represented the University at the national American Chemical Society meeting in New Orleans. Some of the many posters, presentations and research included: "Development of functional plastics containing long-chain aliphatic podands for the remediation of water," "Modified click-style Sonogashira coupling reactions involving silyl-protected alkynes at room temperature," "Friendship is magic: The Detroit Mercy Chem Club takes on sci-fi conventions," "Brewing Chemistry" and "Synthesis of novel ligands for platinum drugs."

Assistant Professor of Biology Steven Chang and Detroit Mercy Dental Assistant Dean of Student Services & Enrollment Management Juliette Daniels presented at the American College Personnel Association Annual Conference in Houston, Texas, March 13. Their session was titled, "A Holistic Approach to Admissions for Undergraduate and Professional Programs."

Professor of History Roy E. Finkenbine gave the talk, "The Underground Railroad in the Detroit River Borderland," at the Osher Lifelong Learning Center at Saginaw Valley State University, and the talk, "Searching for Jordan Anderson," at the historic Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio. Professor of Performing Arts Arthur Beer recently joined Finkenbine to premiere the multimedia play, "Jordan Anderson Writes a Letter," at the University of Dayton.

Associate Professor of Education Ike McKinnon was the emcee at a conference on gun violence at Cass United Methodist Church in Detroit.

Detroit Collaborative Design Center Senior Designer & Project Director Ceara O'Leary was recognized by LOCUS Developers during Women's History Month for her work with the DCDC and surrounding community. O'Leary will present as one of the dynamic leaders at the 2018 LOCUS Leadership Summit: Rebuild America's Neighborhoods in April in Washington D.C. See the full list of developers online.

Professor of English Nicholas Rombes delivered an online lecture and Q&A on the technologies, aesthetics and new narrative possibilities of digital storytelling to students at Falmouth University in the U.K.
