Two UDM alumni named to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s cabinet

Two UDM alumni are helping to shape Detroit’s future in a very direct way. F. Thomas Lewand ’68 and Isaiah McKinnon ’75, ’78 were appointed to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s cabinet in January.

Lewand, who serves as group executive for jobs and economic growth, most recently served as a partner at Bodman L.L.P. in Detroit. He helped to facilitate the building of Ford Field and acted as a special master appointed by U.S. District Judge John Feikens during the Detroit Water and Sewage Department’s federal oversight. He is also a former chair of the UDM Board of Trustees.

McKinnon serves as Deputy Mayor. He has an extensive amount of management experience in public service in the Detroit metropolitan area. He previously served as UDM’s director of Public Safety before becoming chief of Police for the City of Detroit in 1994. McKinnon has taken a leave of absence as an associate professor of Education at UDM.
