Middle school girls use classrooms and computer labs for summer program
Through Mercy Education Project’s summer program in July, 28 middle school girls from Southwest Detroit participated in activities such as leadership development and teambuilding, career exploration, college awareness, and academic and cultural enrichment. In collaboration with Community Records L3C, girls learned about the power of communication and wrote and recorded their own songs. They also prepared and presented PowerPoint presentations about the college application process, how to pay for college, and college life. Programming was held at University of Detroit Mercy, supplemented by weekly field trips to local colleges/universities, recreation centers, places of employment and cultural centers. The program culminated with an overnight field trip to YMCA Camp Ohiyessa in Holly.
