UDM breaks ground on new athletic field and develops vision for new McNichols Campus entrance
The University of Detroit Mercy broke ground over the summer on an exciting new athletic facility, which will include a multi-purpose synthetic playing field and all-weather running track (rendering pictured above). The complex will be constructed on the site of the Titans’ existing soccer field, located on the northeast corner of the McNichols Campus. This multi-purpose field and all-season track will support UDM collegiate and intramural sports teams and UDM students who want to keep fit or participate in group sports.
Phase One of the construction will be completed this fall, in time for use by the UDM men’s and women’s soccer teams. The facility will contain an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events.
Phase Two of the project, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands,
rest rooms, a press box, scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage.
The field will be blessed by UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., on Sept. 19 during the Founders Celebration activities.
Visitors entering campus from McNichols Road will soon see a new, updated look. Pictured below is a rendering of how the new entrance has been envisioned. A brick attendant booth will be positioned to allow for a longer entrance drive and a landscaped median with brick signage. An attractive arched, wrought-iron “University of Detroit Mercy” sign will stretch across the entire entrance.
