What is the Student Conduct Board?

The Student Conduct Board is a group undergraduate and graduate students who are trained and equipped to hold hearings involving students charged with violating the Student Conduct Code. From the Student Conduct Board somewhere between three and five students (also known as a panel) will hear individual cases, based on availability. The hearing panel will review all relevant documentation, listen to testimony from the accused student and the University official, interview witnesses, make a final determination of responsibility for the accused student, and recommend a sanction. The University recognizes the vital role of the Student Conduct Board in the conduct process and supports their decisions and recommendations involving conduct cases.

Is having a Student Conduct Board hearing a choice or an automatic?

Having a hearing before members of the Board is a choice made by the accused student. In some cases the alleged violations may not include the option of having a hearing before members of the Student Conduct Board. That is at the discretion of the Dean of Students or designee. Deciding to have your hearing before members of the Student Conduct Board can be a very educational and worthwhile process. When initially meeting with a university disciplinary officer, if you are considering a hearing before the Student Conduct Board, please ask them questions about the experience.

I have chosen to hold my hearing before the Student Conduct Board so how does it work?

Once you decide to have your hearing before the Board, you first will be notified in writing of your decision to have your hearing before the Board. The advisor for the Board will arrange a date and time that works for the schedule of the accused student and enough Board members to hold a hearing. If the accused student has witnesses that he/she wants called on their behalf, that information is communicated to the Student Conduct Board advisor and they are notified in writing of the hearing date and time.

Board members will review all relevant case information immediately before the hearing begins. The only individuals present during the entire hearing are the accused student, University representative, Board members and the advisor for the Board. If an accused student has chosen to have an advisor support them at the hearing that, member may also be present during the entire hearing. The hearing is recorded as part of the official record. The accused student and the university representative both make opening statements and then answer any questions from the Board members. If any witnesses have been called, they will be asked to join the hearing one at a time to answer questions from the Board, the accused student and the university representative.

At the end of the hearing, the accused student and the university representative will each make closing statements. Then the accused student and university representative will be asked to leave the room where the hearing is being held, and the Board members will deliberate on finding the accused student responsible or not responsible and recommend any possible sanctions. The accused can re-enter the hearing and listen to the Board’s decision or they can wait to receive it in writing from the University.

Can I appeal the Student Conduct Board’s decision?

What happens if I am found responsible for a violation(s)?

If you are found responsible for a violation(s) you would need to fulfill any sanctions issued by the University.

How do I become a member of the Student Conduct Board?

In the fall and winter terms, there will be information posted around campus and on the web with applications to complete for Board membership. After turning in an application, you will have a one-on-one interview with the Board advisor or Dean of Students. If selected to be a member of the Student Conduct Board, you must attend both training sessions held early in the fall and winter terms. These trainings are mandatory if you want to serve on the Board. Traditionally, the training sessions have been held on Saturdays, but not always. You must also have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and not be involved in any current student conduct proceedings.

Who is eligible to serve on the Student Conduct Board?

Any undergraduate, graduate or professional student in good standing with the University is eligible to serve on the Student Conduct Board.

When does the Student Conduct Board hear cases?

The Student Conduct Board convenes only during the fall and winter terms to hear cases. No cases are heard by the Student Conduct Board during the final two weeks of each term, and during the summer terms.

Does the University uphold decisions by the Student Conduct Board?

Yes, all decisions and recommendations made by the Student Conduct Board for student code violations are supported by the University. The University does reserve the right to alter or not follow the recommendations on rare occasions where the decision and/or recommendation is counter to University policy or mission.

Do Student Conduct Board members receive payment for hearing cases?

No, serving on the Student Conduct Board is on an entirely volunteer basis. However, the experiences can be very valuable for leadership, group decision-making, and ethical and moral discussions.
