FYE Common Read
Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle, S.J.
The book chosen for 2014 is Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle, S.J. As a pastor working in a neighborhood with the highest concentration of murderous gang activity in Los Angeles, Fr. Boyle created an organization to provide jobs and job training so that young people could work together and learn mutual respect. The book distills his hard-earned wisdom gained through 20 years in the barrio in a series of essays about universal harmony and redemption.
Tattoos on the Heart reminds us that no life is less valuable than another. Students will receive their book and study guide during Summer Orientation so that they can finish it over the summer and arrive on campus ready for discussions and forums related to it. We hope you will encourage your son or daughter to participate in the Common Read.
One way to discuss your thoughts about the book is on Twitter using the hashtag #UDMreads.
Enjoy the summer and I look forward to meeting you in the fall.
