University of Detroit Mercy hosts Freshman Convocation
Friday, August 31, 2012
10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Calihan Hall
Listen to the presentations given during the 2012 First Year Experience Convocation:
- UDM President Antoine M. Garibaldi gives his welcome and advice to new students
- Associate Professor of Education Donald DiPaolo addresses new students' fears in his keynote, "Let the Rattle Come"
- Welcome from Alvin Ford, president of the Student Government Association
The First Year Convocation is held in Calihan Hall to welcome new students to the University Community. The students are led in a processional by a bagpiper, similar to Commencement, and greeted with the sound of "Alma Mater" played by the UDM Pep Band. Students are introduced to key administrators of the University, including the dean of each College and School. After the keynote address and recessional, students and administrators mingle and enjoy a delicious lunch at patio tables under white tents with festive music. The event marks a positive start for students as they begin their first semester at the University.
