2009 was the inaugural year of the First Year Convocation, which was held in Calihan Hall,  to welcome new students to the University Community. The students were led in a processional by a bagpiper, similar to Commencement, and were greeted with the sound of "Alma Mater" played by the UDM Pep Band. President, Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D., gave the Welcome Address to the class.

University Ministry Director Gary Wright, S.J., presided over a brief interfaith prayer service which included the UDM Gospel Choir. Students were introduced to key administrators of the University, including the dean of each College and School. The keynote speaker for the event was Donald DiPaolo, Ph.D., associate professor of Education. Pamela Zarkowski, J.D., M.P.H., Provist & Vice President for Academic Affairs, led the Charge to the Class of 2013, which included reciting the Matriculation Oath.

Following the ceremony students, and administrators mingled and enjoyed a delicious lunch at patio tables under white tents with festive music. The event marked a positive start for students as they begin their first semester at the University.
