The Quads Complex
Welcome to the "Quads"!
The Quads can house about 440 upper-class students. The complex consists of four 4-story residence halls surrounding a single Commons building. The buildings are connected at the basement level to the Quads Commons building.
History
In1967, under the Father Carron, a new residence hall was set to be built. Due to the growth of the student body, in particular out-of-state, students were turned away because of inadequate housing. Architects Gene Paulsen and Associates, designer of the Ford Life Science Buildings, designed a new complex of buildings. The complex consisted of four residence halls connected underground in the center with a commons.
Ground was broken for the Quadrangle or “Quads” on October 5, 1967. The Quads would house 128 students and the great thing about the arrangement was that the buildings’ style allowed for coeducational housing. The commons, fifth building in the center, was planned to have a lobby, lounge, game room, chapel, TV room and multipurpose room. Students began moving in August 1969. Father Carron dedicated the Quadrangle on Thursday, October 23, 1969.
Amenities
The Quads house the University of Detroit-Mercy’s upperclassmen residents. The floors are separated co-ed by suite and each suite has its own bathroom, the envy of the other residence halls. Every room is also air conditioned. On every floor, there is a lounge with seating and a TV. The Quad Commons conveniently houses the SUMS mailboxes for residents and the Quad Commons Theatre which serves as multipurpose room and TV room (private meeting space for groups and organizations).
The "Rock"
The “Rock” which is situated behind West Quad and constantly painted by the different organizations on campus, serves as the perfect object to represent the ever-changing spirit of the Quads. The Quads houses the members of many student organizations, teams, and veterans returning to the campus life.
