Holden Hall

Holden Hall

Holden Hall is a co-ed dormitory separating male and female residents by floor. After the addition of new windows, Holden Hall is ready to accommodate residents of different backgrounds, cultures, and origins. Branching from the main floor lies the Holden Apartment and the Resident Director’s Apartment, but the real jewel is the Holden Main Lobby, one of the most elegant main lounges on campus. With its close proximity to the academic buildings, it is also a relief when the snow begins its descent. Holden Hall welcomes all students to come and enjoy its communities as they make their way through their college experience.

Holden Hall dates back to 1946 as a gift from James S. Holden, a former member of the Administrative Council of the University. James Holden donated the building to the University of Detroit for “the respect, admiration and friendship he held for Father Poetker, former President and then Executive Dean”. Holden’s only request was that “suitable recognition be permanently accorded Fr. Poetker in the form of an appropriate tablet to be placed in the main hallway of the proposed building which would record a tribute to Fr. Poetker for his services to the university.

Ground was broken on Holden Hall in the spring of 1946 making it one of the first buildings erected after the Great Depression and the post-war years. The building was to be used for housing men, specifically returning veterans. In September of 1947, 180 male students entered the building to live for the first time. Entering the building, when one looks up either at the tall building or the sky where one finds inspiration, they are welcomed with four words: Domus Amica Domus Optima (A friendly home is the best home).
