Born in Druten, Holland in 1928, Fr. Kolvenbach was elected the 29th Superior General in September 1983 during the 33rd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus. The Superior General is the highest ranking Jesuit in the world. Fr. Kolvenbach succeeded Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Prior to being elected Superior General, Fr. Kolvenbach was a professor of general linguistics at St. Joseph's University in Beirut and was the provincial of the vice-province of the Middle East. Most recently, he served as rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome for two years.
