As part of our commitment to our neighborhood, University of Detroit Mercy is proud to be a part of University Commons, a community organization created to oversee the commercial development of Livernois Avenue, from Eight Mile to the Lodge, and McNichols, from Livernois to Wyoming.
The organization’s name is a nod to the educational institutions that exist in the area, notably UDM and Marygrove College.
University Commons aims to:
- Focus on development that will improve commercial offerings.
- Link the educational institutions to new and/or improved commercial districts.
- Enhance the visual appeal of Livernois and McNichols corridors.
- Provide a clear gateway to the area.

People for Palmer Park
People for Palmer Park (PFPP) is an organization committed to preserving, reinventing and revitalizing Detroit’s historic Palmer Park.
Palmer Park offers 296 acres of lawns and historic woodlands, a public golf course, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, Lake Frances, the historic Log Cabin, and some of the most valuable and diverse ecosystems in the state. Located between 6 and 7 Mile Roads and west of Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Palmer Park has been a treasured nature park and recreation site for more than 100 years.
PFPP hopes to restore and revitalize Palmer Park to be used as originally intended when the land was donated by Senator Thomas W. Palmer in the late 1880s: To be “a park for the good of everyone.”
Thanks to PFPP, Palmer Park is now home to a variety of events and activities, including free yoga classes during the spring and summer, tennis lessons, children’s story times and ice cream socials.
A full calendar of events is available on the PFPP website.
