Students spend break helping others

UDM’s Alternative Break trips, which celebrated 22 years of existence in 2011, allow students to live the charisms of the Jesuits and Sisters of Mercy, by offering “compassionate service to those most in need” and developing “men and women for others.” In January 2011, 10 students and four colleagues traveled to New Orleans for the first Alternative Winter Break, where they worked with Catholic Charities to continue rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. In March 2011, 57 students and colleagues traveled to Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Sacramento, Calif.; Los Angeles; El Paso, Texas; Chicago; Salem, W. Va. and Detroit to help those in need: building and rebuilding, dealing with immigration issues, hunger and homelessness, urban and rural poverty, and food issues.

Campus Kitchen at UDM

The Campus Kitchen Project is an emerging leader in community service for students and resourceful anti-hunger programs for communities around the country. UDM is the first Campus Kitchen in the State of Michigan. Approximately 300 students participate in the program to provide 2,000 meals to community members.
