Community Outreach - Leadership Development Institute
Service Learning Classes
More than 69 courses across the University incorporate Service Learning in classes, resulting in course-related, direct services to the poor and marginalized in our community. During the 2006-2007 school year, 1,176 UDM student volunteers provided service in conjunction with 140 community service agencies.
Community Partnerships
Last year, the Leadership Development Institute completed a three-year focus on homelessness in Detroit, in partnership with the Homeless Action Network of Detroit, resulting in a 500% increase in the engagement of professional and community members in conducting the HUD-mandated count of homeless outside the shelters. Sixty percent of students enrolled in service-learning courses performed services and gained knowledge ans experience related to homelessness.
Student Volunteer Center
Through service and leadership opportunities, the Student Volunteer Center involves faculty, staff and students in caring for and improving our communities. In addition to working with local schools, soup kitchens, and shelters, the Volunteer Center sponsors a number of campus-wide events including a Christmas project with COTS, and programs at the Mercy Education Project, Habitat for Humanity, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Orientation Outreach Program
During the Fall 2007 PTV orientation program for freshman students, approximately 240 students and colleagues performed community service at 13 community agencies.
