Law School Expands Clinics
The UDM School of Law provides legal outreach with the following community clinics:
- Urban Law Clinic (expanded to include a veteran's clinical program and a Criminal Trials Clinic - 130 cases annually)
- Immigration Law Clinic (647 client interviews last year)
- Mobile Law Office (assisted 500-600 clients in Wayne, Oakland and other counties in Michigan)
- Mediation Clinic (90 mediations/semester)
- Appellate Advocacy Clinic (8 appeals/semester)
The clinics inspire UDM law students to make pro bono services an integral part of their legal careers.
Public Service Fellowships
The Sr. Emily George, RSM, Summer Public Service Fellowship Program provides School of Laws students with an opportunity to work for the benefit of the community while earning a stipend and gaining valuable legal skills in preparation for a legal career. Approximately 5-7 law students receive Fellowship funds each summer. The students work for agencies primarily located in the metropolitan Detroit community, serving or advocating for the poor, disadvantaged, marginalized or underrepresented of society. Placements have included the Immigration Law Department of the Archdiocese of Detroit, the Women’s Survival Center of Oakland County, Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services, the WCNLS Elder Law Center, the Human Rights Department of the City of Detroit, Freedom House in Detroit, and Western Michigan Legal Services.
