Service Learning Classes

Each year 90 courses across the University incorporate Service Learning in classes, resulting in course-related, direct services to the poor and marginalizes in our community. Each year, approximately 1,800 UDM student volunteers provide about 15,000 hours of service in conjunction with more than 100 community service agencies.

Emerging Leaders Program

Students in the co-curricular Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) complete 250 hours of service in order to qualify for the Emerging Leaders’ Medallion or 125 hours to qualify for the Emerging Leaders’ Pin. For more information about the Emerging Leaders Program, visit (link)

Ford Community Corp Partnerships

Through a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Institute is able to support 10 faculty-students teams who create service-learning projects in 10 Winter Term classes each year. This initiative involves approximately 150 students who serve more than 1,200 individuals in our community. For more information on the program, visit (link).

Community Partnerships

The Institute maintains partnerships with area community organizations and agencies such as COTS, Mercy Education Project, City Year Detroit, Gesu School, etc., in order for UDM students, faculty and staff to volunteer their support in addressing some of the area's social problems and injustices. Each school year, approximately 1,800 UDM student volunteers provided service in conjunction with more than 100 community service agencies.

Orientation Outreach Program

During the Fall PTV orientation program for freshman students, approximately 270 students and colleagues performed community service at 14 community agencies.

Inaugural Community Engagement Activities

The Institute staff and alumni volunteer coordinators Norm and Cathy Schmitt organized 14 service opportunities for approximately 120 UDM alumni, faculty, staff and students at nine different community organizations as part of the Presidential Inauguration activities in April 2012.
