Meet our Instructors

Susan McPhersonSusan McPherson: Kettlebell Fitness
My original reason for getting into fitness and health promotion was due to adolescent obesity; the total percentage of adolescents who are overweight and obese has increased substantially. With changes occurring in society, children, adolescents, and adults have become extremely sedentary; the introduction and growth of technology has been a gift and a curse. With my observations, I decided to pursue a career in health and fitness. I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. I teach a few fitness classes and hope to expand. When I'm not at the gym, I enjoy spending time doing other recreational physical activities such as biking and bowling; I also love to travel.

Jim StoutJim Stout: Yoga
Jim joined Detroit Mercy in 1994, and also teaches at two yoga studios: Everyday Yoga in Royal Oak/Clawson, and Yoga Now in West Bloomfield. Jim is an avid runner and cyclist, having participated in marathons, long distance road cycling and mountain biking. Jim has the 200 hour certification as recognized by Yoga Alliance. He is also a certified spinning instructor.

Matt ChesleyMatt Chesley: Cardio Bootcamp / Butts & Guts/Wake Up Call/SYNRGY X
I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, as well as the founder of the Detroit Mercy Biggest Loser. Since January 2013, I have lost 70 lbs and kept it off. I love teaching others about fitness and introducing new exercises to break the monotony of exercising the same way every week. I sing and play guitar in a band and have played Hard Rock Cafe Detroit, St. Andrew's Hall, and the Pike Room. I have shared the stage with Everclear, Fall Out Boy, and Chiodos. I have a daughter born in July 2014 and a son born August 2016.

MinaMina Cunmulaj: Yoga
I got into yoga/fitness because in October of 2014, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Instead of taking medication, I wanted to take a more holistic pathway by becoming healthy as a whole. I changed my diet and my lifestyle, and that's what made me so passionate about yoga! (: I'm going to school for Pre Med Biology, in hopes of becoming a neurologist some day. In my free time I do yoga...of course, ride my horse, and prepare for the Miss Michigan pageant by working out. In addition to that, I really enjoy cooking! 

CrystalCrystal Payter: Barre/Cardio Kickboxing
I have a B.F.A in Dance, and Associate’s in Fitness Leadership, and my M.S. in Exercise Science. I have worked as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor for 6 years. I have taught classes in Zumba, senior fitness, spinning, kickboxing, total body strength, barre, and yoga. I work in cardiac rehab as an exercise physiologist for Henry Ford Health System, and in my spare time I enjoy running 5ks, 10ks, obstacle races like Tough Mudder and the occasional half marathon. This year I am signed up for my first full marathon.

KaitKaitlin Lambert: Plyo X
I am a sophomore in the 7-year-dental program. I have always had an interest in sports a staying active. I played softball and ran cross country in highschool. I still enjoy running as well as mountain biking and snowboarding. I began coming to the fitness center and attending different fitness classes last year as a freshman. I started working at the fitness center at the beginning of sophomore year, and I am very excited that I get to teach a class this semester!

RBRachel Bennett: Yoga
I am a recent member of the University team. I was hired on in April of 2016 to be the full time personal counselor in the Wellness Center. In addition to being an LMSW, I have been a certified group fitness instructor for about 6 years. I teach bootcamp, HIIT, BOSU training, abs and core and I am a certified Schwinn Cycle Instructor. I recently added yoga instructor to my resume as of January 2017. I am an RYT 200. I teach at other local fitness centers including YMCA and Detroit Athletic Club. When I am not teaching or working as a personal counselor, I spend time with my sons and try to be outdoors as much as possible kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, or running with my dogs. In the past I have trained to run Spartan Races, Tough Mudder, and other obstacle courses. Fitness is a way of life for me.
