Students of Concern
The Students of Concern Committee (SCC) is a University resource established to help promote a safe campus community by receiving, collecting, considering and — when deemed necessary — acting upon information regarding behavior of concern exhibited by a student or group of students.
Action by the SCC seeks to provide supportive intervention services to facilitate students achieving their academic and personal goals while ensuring the safety of the campus community.
Who is referred to the Student Concern Committee?
- Students who may be a threat to their own safety
- Students who may pose a threat to members of the University community
- Students who may have experienced traumatic personal events
- Students whose behavior and/or emotional state raise significant concerns
Who can make a referral?
- Students may be referred directly to the SCC by any individual who has observed or witnessed behavior of a student that causes concern
- Faculty, staff, students, and community members who interact with our students can refer
- Students can be referred anonymously
What happens after a student is referred to the SCC Committee?
The SCC Chair (the Dean of Students) receives SCC referrals. If the referral suggests that the student may be a Student of Concern, the student is asked (by phone and/or email) to meet with the Dean of Students. In cases when the student is not available to meet with the Dean of Students (e.g., the student has returned to a non-local permanent residence), the Dean of Students will attempt to arrange a phone call with the student.
Based upon the information provided by the referral and from this meeting/phone call with the student, along with consultation with SCC Committee members, the Dean of Students will propose an action plan to the student. This plan will be outlined in a letter from the Dean of Students that will be mailed and emailed to the student.
In accordance with FERPA, following assessment and intervention with the Students of Concern, the SCC will provide feedback to the referring individual to inform him or her of resolution of the case and any follow-up which may be needed.
