Care for Creation:

As the world wakes up to the ecological crisis and the need for environmental responsibility, so too communities of faith are re-awakening to the spiritual wisdom and ethical imperatives about care for creation found in their rich traditions and resources. At the same time, new discoveries in the sciences —from genetics to cosmology, from evolutionary biology to ecosystem studies—are enriching spirituality and theology with new perspectives on the place of human beings in the cosmos and on the one life we share with all other creatures.

As a response to this newfound awareness, this year’s Celebrate Spirit will invite the UDM community to engage today’s challenges regarding environmental sustainability with both spiritual reflection and practical action. If in faith we see God as “Creator,” we are called to care for all creation as God’s gift to us.

UDM celebrates the founding of the Religious Sisters of Mercy

Celebrate Spirit! is the official welcome to the new school year for UDM faculty, staff and students. Celebrate Spirit! welcomes people of all faith traditions to ask God's blessing on the new school year.  Find out more about this tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages.

This year's Celebrate Spirit! service will be led by Celebrant UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., welcoming people of all faith traditions to ask God's blessing on the new school year.

As a result of this year's Celebrate Spirit, we hope that the UDM community will be more aware of the gift of creation, more moved to praise and thank God for it, and more empowered to take action to care for it. In the light of current social awareness and scientific understanding, we hope that all who participate will see environmental concern as more than a political position, more than a practical survival strategy. Rather it is a deep and necessary response flowing from our faith traditions, spiritualities, and ethical principles.

Picnic lunch by the Fountain
The picnic lunch by the Fountain provides food, music and fun to share with new and old friends around the Fisher Fountain on the north side of the Student Center.

The Student Organization Fair
A fair is held during the picnic lunch to acquaint students with the numerous ways they can become involved in student activities.

Open Choir Rehearsal
Choir rehearsals will be held Thursday, Sept. 10 and Thursday, Sept. 17 from 12:45 to 2 p.m.,  in the St. Ignatius Chapel, in the Commerce & Finance Building.

Note:
Class schedules will be changed on Sept. 24 to accomodate Celebrate Spirit! attendance. Also, food service in The Loft and Titan Dining Room will be closed from 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
