Workshops – Fall 2014

Career Education Center Overview Sessions

This 30-minute session introduces you to the Career Education Center. We encourage all students to complete this overview prior to scheduling appointments with Career Services advisors. We will provide a 20-minute overview of our website and resources, followed by 10 minutes of Q & A. Please join us to learn how we can help you reach your career-related goals!

If you are NEW to the CEC, join us for one of these upcoming sessions:

  • Overview of the CEC on Tuesday, September 3  from 1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Overview of the CEC on Wednesday, September 10 from 3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Overview of the CEC on Tuesday, September 16 from 1:30 – 2:00 p.m.

Target Audience: Primarily students who are unaware of services and NOT registered in CEC 3000 or 3020

What Can I do with a Major In…

This is a 60 to 90 minute workshop to assist students in understanding the steps  to take towards a career path. Participants will reflect on why they selected or major and how this relates to career ambitions.

Topics:

  • How do you choose a career?
  • What do you value – and why is that important?
  • What career resources do you need?
  • Where to find employment options?

Target Audience: Current Freshmen and Sophomore students and NOT registered in CEC 3000 or 3020

Career Education Center Skills Cafés

Resume Café on Tuesday, September 23 1:00pm to 2:15pm

Resumes , Vitae's and Portfolios!  - 60 to 75 minutes

This workshop will discuss the primary differences between a resume, Curriculum Vitae and portfolios. Participants will receive information on tips for making your resume stand out and understanding the difference between a resume and a vita. This workshop will also cover when to use a vita as well as tips for creating a portfolio.  During this workshop, we will provide you with general resume tips and answer your specific questions. This is not a resume writing workshop and resumes will not be reviewed during this workshop.

Career Fair Café Tuesday, September 30 1:00pm to 2:15pm

What to Do at a Career Fair!  - 60 to 75 minutes

Recruiters know whether they are interested in you within three seconds of meeting you! Are you the “total package” career fair recruiters are looking for? Hear directly from the employers who hire UDM students/alumni how to make yourself “memorable” to a recruiter at a job fair. Be in the know BEFORE YOU GO to the Fall Career Fair!.

LinkedIn Café: on Tuesday, October 21 from 1:00pm to 2:15pm

LinkedIn Basics – 60 to 75 minutes

Did you know a recent survey showed 93% of recruiters use LinkedIn in their hiring efforts? During this workshop for new LinkedIn users, we will provide an overview of LinkedIn and the key elements of building a strong branded profile. Please join us to learn how we can help you to maximize LinkedIn to reach your career-related goals!

Interview Café: on Tuesday, November 11 from 1:00pm to 2:15pm

Tell Me about yourself? Smart Answers to Tough Questions – 60 to 75 minutes

Learn how to distinguish between what the recruiter is asking and what s/he really wants to know! Develop strategies that will help you answer the really tough questions. Workshop will include a discussion of pre-interview preparation, professional dress, non-verbal communication, appropriate after-interview follow-up, and the various types of interview questions.

On-Campus Recruitment - Term I 2014

The University of Detroit Mercy 2014-15 On-Campus Recruitment schedule begins September 30, 2014 and runs until November 14, 2014.  Interested applicants must submit resumes through TitanCareerLink and directly to the employer.


Campus Interviewing is your opportunity to interview well-qualified candidates from more than 100 academic degrees and programs of study offered at UDM.  Our office will market your interview date and recruiting criteria via our online interactive interview system, campus bulletin boards, during class presentations, etc.  Based on the criteria provided and the type of schedule(s) requested, candidates would respond either by submitting a resume for pre-selection or choose an interview time slot.
