English Language Requirements
A TOEFL score is not required for admission to UDM. However, if English is not your native language, or if you have not successfully completed a four-year degree program from an approved U.S. school, you are required to take UDM's own academic English language proficiency test upon arrival at the University. If you want to take the TOEFL, or have already taken it, a score of 250, (600 paper-based), and a writing score of 5 will exempt you from UDM's test. Students taking the new internet-based TOEFL need a score of 100 with a writing subscore of 24 in order to be exempted from UDM's test.
Students whose scores on the UDM test indicate that they are not yet proficient in English are required to enroll in the American Language and Culture Program. Depending upon their score, students will be assigned to Intensive English (23 hours per week), Intermediate English (9 hours per week), or Advanced English (3 hours per week). Students enrolled in Intermediate or Advanced English are required to take academic classes in addition to their ESL classes.
Students who have not been admitted to an academic program, but who wish to develop their English proficiency, may apply specifically for admission to the American Language and Culture Program without applying for a major.
