Master Promissory Note

Students who are borrowing loans for the first time with a lender must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the lender. Without an MPN on file, the lender will not disburse loan funds.

Carl Perkins Loan MPN

UDM mails the paper MPN for the Carl Perkins Loan in the award letter package. To borrow the Perkins loan, the student must return the completed paper MPN to the Financial Aid Office with the signed award letter.

Stafford Loan MPN

When UDM receives the student's signed award letter, UDM sends the Stafford loan information to the lender/servicer that the student has chosen. The lender/servicer will then contact the student with instructions for completing the MPN. Most lenders/services direct students to complete the MPN online.

Parent PLUS Loan MPN

New Parent PLUS Loan borrowers

To borrow the PLUS Loan a parent must complete the MPN and the PLUS section on the back of the student's signed award letter then return them both to the Financial Aid Office.

Pre-approvals for New Parent PLUS Loan borrowers

Parents can obtain pre-approvals from some lenders on the web or by phone. An MPN must still be submitted to UDM for additional certification.

Previous Parent PLUS Loan borrowers

A parent borrower who would like to continue to borrow a PLUS Loan must complete the PLUS section on the back of the award letter to allow UDM to certify additional funds. The parent who signs the award letter must be the same parent who previously borrowed the PLUS Loan. If a different parent wants to borrow or a new lender is being requested then a new MPN must be submitted along with the student's signed award letter.

Graduate PLUS (Grad PLUS) Loan MPN

New Grad PLUS Loan borrowers

To borrow the Grad PLUS Loan the graduate student must complete an MPN and return it to the Financial Aid Office with the student's signed award letter.
