For Graduate Students

A Graduate student attending the University of Detroit Mercy may apply for financial aid to help meet their educational costs.  Aid may be available from one or more of the sources listed below.

Students desiring financial aid consideration should complete the FAFSA as early as possible each year.  Go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov or request a paper form available from the Financial Aid Office.

Michigan Tuition Grant Program (need based aid)

Grants for Michigan Residents attending private Michigan colleges and universities. File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply. (Must be received by federal processor before July 1 each year for consideration.) Annual award maximum: full time (9+ credits/term): $2000; ¾ time (7-8 credits/term): $1500; 1/2 time (5-6 credits/term): $1000; less than half time no award.

Federal Stafford Loans (need based and non-need based) (minimum 5 credits required per term)

Loans of up to $18,500 or the cost of education minus other aid (whichever is less) each academic year.  Up to $8,500 of this loan may be eligible for an interest subsidy from the federal government. No payment is due until 6 months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops to less than half time. File a FAFSA to apply.

Work Study jobs (minimum of 5 credits required per term)

A number of part time jobs are available to students who wish to earn funds to help meet their college expenses. Students may work on campus, or off campus in an area related to their major with permission of the University. Students may work up to 20 hours/week while enrolled at least half time (25 hours for FIA Work First students) and up to full time during breaks and summers when not enrolled. File FAFSA.

UDM School Educators Remission (No minimum credit hour requirement)

Institutional aid in the amount of 60% of tuition costs for a full-time teacher, substitute, administrator, counselor, paraprofessional or teacher's aid to further their education at the undergraduate, post-degree or masters level.  Application Deadlines: Term I, October 1; Term II, February 1; Term III, Summer I, or II June 1. UDM Graduate Assistantships

Several departments on campus have openings for graduate teaching or research assistants who receive up to full tuition remission. Contact the department directly.

MI-Loan (Michigan Alternative Loan Program) (no minimum credit hour requirement)

Loan of up to the cost of education less all other aid per academic year. Students may defer payments up to five years of the 25-year repayment period.  Information is available at www.Michigan.gov/mistudentaid or 1-888-643-7521.

Private Alternative loans (cost of education less all other aid)

Educational loans through private banking agencies; based upon creditworthiness of borrower or co-signer. Each program has its own set of guidelines for eligibility. Campus One - www.campusone.com or Citibank - www.studentloan.com.

Vendor Discounts

A 25% tuition discount is available to the employees, spouses and dependents of various companies that do business with UDM. Check with your HR Department or go to www.udmercy.edu/finaid/forms.htm for a list of current companies.

Religious Discounts

A 50% tuition discount is available.  Contact Pat Hall-Thomas CLAE, 313-993-1287, Briggs 12 for eligibility requirements and approval.
