Writing Center Workshops

The Writing Center offers students the opportunity to attend workshops, which are held approximately twice a month, throughout the fall and winter semesters. Student workshops are typically held Tuesday or Thursday during “dead hour.”

All workshops take place in the CLAE conference room (103 Briggs) and last about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Students who are interested in attending should reserve their space in a workshop

Research Synthesis

Posponed due to weather

In this workshop led by Writing Center Director Lauren Rinke, students will learn helpful strategies for working with multiple research sources. Students will have the opportunity to pre-write and utilize their own research to organize articles, while also learning best practices for utilizing quoted source material within their essays.

APA Documentation

Thursday, Feb. 22, 2023 12:45-1:45 p.m.

In this workshop, students are introduced to the APA documentation style (7th edition), including how to quote and summarize from an original source. This hands-on workshop, led by Writing Center Director Lauren Rinke, students will see examples and format citations/references in their own work. Topics include citing within the text, using signal phrases, creating the references page, and documenting online sources.

Classical Argument Structure

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of The Classical Argument Structure. One of the oldest organizing devices in rhetoric, the classical argument incorporates five major parts necessary for persuasion. Participants will find this workshop useful for developing effective arguments intended for specific audiences.

University of Detroit Mercy faculty are invited to request Writing Center workshops. Workshops are an excellent way to introduce students to specialized topics in writing and give students a chance to practice.

Workshops are taught by a writing consultant with topic-specific training, and can be held in your classroom or Briggs 129.
