Bachelor of Science/Master of Science Program in Computer Science | Office | Website

Description

The College of Engineering & Science offers a combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science program in Computer Science.

In order to complete both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in five years, the student must (a) be very well prepared as an incoming freshman, ready to take our core Software Engineering courses; and (b) satisfy all the admission criteria (see below) at the end of the junior year, in order to take graduated level courses while still an undergraduate.

Credit Hours

  • Students must complete 126 credit hours for the undergraduate B.S. degree, plus and additional 30 credit hours for M.S. degree

General Information

  • Students with a GPA of 3.25, 95 credit hours should apply for the program near the end of their third year or in the beginning of their fourth year.
  • If accepted into the program, students may take up to 3 graduate credits in their fourth year that will count towards both undergraduate and graduate requirements.
  • In their fifth year, students will be be registered as full-time graduate students, which requires that they are registered for 9 credit hours of graduate-level courses per term. These courses will be charged at the graduate tuition rate.

Financial Aid

  • Students accepted in the 5-year program must check with their financial aid advisor regarding details of their available aid.
  • UDM undergraduate scholarships continue in the fifth year.
  • Departmental scholarship / teaching assistantships may be available from the department.

Degree Requirements

The B.S. degree program in SE requires 126 credits of course work including 78 credits required for the major. It is designed to be completed by a full-time student in four academic years. The 30-credit M.S. degree program in SE may take two academic years to complete - dependent upon the academic performance and preparation of the B.S. degree holder, e.g. how well he/she satisfies the prerequisites for admission to graduate school at UDM. However, the requirements of the two degree programs can be accomplished by our best students over a period of five years, instead of six years.

The course requirements for the B.S. + M.S. program will total to 156 credits. They are based on the current existing requirements for each program separately.

An SE major must have achieved the following in (approximately) three years of study toward the B.S. degree at UDM in order to be admitted to the combined program:

  • Completion of at least 95 credits of coursework
  • At least 30 of the 39 Computer Science credits required for the B.S. degree must be completed including particular SE courses that are specified as prerequisites for admission to the M.S. program.
  • Achieving all of the above with a QPA of at least 3.25, both overall and in SE.
