MFEN 3310 Manufacturing Systems

Modeling, analysis, and design of manufacturing systems. Optimization of the manufacturing process. Manufacturing concepts such as dedicated, lead, flexible, agile, manufacturing cells, and just-in-time will be studied, as well as product design considerations for manufacturing. Computer aided process planning, computer aided manufacturing, and the impact of the manufacturing system on quality and on the economy will be included.

MFEN 3330 Principles of Lean Manufacturing

This course introduces the principles and methods of Lean Manufacturing. It emphasizes that Lean Manufacturing is the result of elimination of waste from manufacturing operations. The various forms of waste in manufacturing are identified and their adverse effects are evaluated. Methods to eliminate each form of waste are introduced and their applications are illustrated using examples from industry. Examples of successful and unsuccessful applications of Lean Manufacturing principles are analyzed.

Principles and approaches involved in analysis of data for quality control purposes. Topics to be covered include control charts, sampling procedures, process capability analysis, aspects of design specifications and tolerance analysis of various quality systems and their principles by discussing the relationship between product features, manufacturing, and quality control processes.

MFEN 3900 Mechanisms and Machinery

The course covers basic concepts in mechanisms and kinematics, kinematic diagrams, degrees of freedom, graphical and analytical methods of displacement, velocity, and acceleration analysis, and an introduction to dynamics of mechanisms. An introduction to cams, graphical displacement analysis, gears, and concepts of path, and function generation, and dimensional synthesis is included.

The in-depth study of material removal processes. The models of orthogonal and oblique cutting are considered. Topics include: tool life and wear, surface finish, cutting fluids, process economics, traditional and non-traditional machining.

Introduction of plant location and design theory and the study of models for facilities design. Models for determining plant size and time phasing. Design of manufacturing, warehouse, and material handling facilities. Use of heuristic, analytic, and computer-aided methods in the facilities design process.

MFEN 4340 Joining and Assembly

Introduction to methods of joining, including electric arc, thermo-mechanical, and radiation welding, and fasteners. Joining methods, consumable and non-consumable electrodes, power source requirements and energy balance, applications. Introduction to principles of design for assembly and robotics and robotic assembly. The application of design for assembly. Overview of robots and their application to assembly. Introduction to robotic degrees of freedom, forward and inverse kinematics, workspace, and programming. Course instruction makes heavy use of case studies and hands-on projects.

MFEN 4360 Tool Design and Construction

Cutting tool and die design and selection, analysis and design of jigs and fixtures, tool setting, and gage design and selection. Cutting tool and fixture clamping forces; part locating principles. Introduction to tools used for other manufacturing processes such as stamping dies and injection molds. Economic considerations.

MFEN 4510 Manufacturing Engineering Capstone

This course consists of a comprehensive team design project utilizing all major components of manufacturing engineering technology. It includes technical and economic considerations. Team work is required. Written and oral presentation of the project and major considerations in the course.

Prerequisites:
MENG 3820 (Minimum Grade of D, May not be taken concurrently)
ENGR 2040 (Minimum Grade of D, May not be taken concurrently)


Theory and practice of the use of computers in manufacturing engineering. In-depth use of computers during a manufacturing process, including: numerical controlled machines (CNC) programmable logic controllers (PLC), coordinate measuring machines (CMM), vision technology and systems, robotics and networks/data exchange. Projects are the principal mode of instruction.
