Prerequisites: ENL 1310 (Minimum Grade of D, May not be taken concurrently) Survey of the major trends and figures in American literature from the beginnings through the Civil War. Alongside classic figures such as Rowlandson, Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Douglass, Stowe, and Dickinson, the class explores previously marginalized writers. Students also learn about contemporary theoretical approaches to early American literature as well as the cultural contexts of antebellum writing.	3	0	0
