DHY 8080 Oral Health Assessment

The purpose of this course is to introduce patient assessment skills utilized in the Dental Hygiene Process of Care. Concepts and techniques of assessment will be introduced and practiced in the classroom and/or clinical setting with fellow students as patients. Assessment skills introduced include the following: Medicolegal Documentation, Medical/Dental History, Common Medical Conditions and Medications, Accessing and Documenting Drug Information, Vital Signs, Communication for Assessment, Head and Neck Examination and Lesion Description, Dental and Periodontal Assessment. This course will prepare the student for the assessment portion of patient care in the clinical courses.

DHY 8090 Biologic Basis to Soft Tissue Disease

An overview of the history and prevalence of periodontal disease. Epidemiology of periodontal disease will be used to understand the risk factors for disease progression and the relationship of periodontal disease to systemic disease. Basic microbiology, normal flora, basic immunology and host parasitic interactions will be presented.

DHY 8100 Dental Hygiene Care I

The purpose of the course is to introduce the dental hygiene process of care with a focus on periodontal instrumentation. Concepts and techniques of instrumentation are practiced in both the simulation laboratory with simulators and in the clinical setting with fellow students as patients. Periodontal instruments introduced include the following: scalers, universal curets, gracey curets, and ultrasonic/sonic instrumentation. Assessment instruments introduced include: dental explorers and periodontal probe. Additional skills introduced include: infection control protocol, body mechanics, oral hygiene instruction (brushing and flossing), professional fluoride application, removal of extrinsic stain (polishing/air polishing), and instrument sharpening.

DHY 8130 Radiology

This course will prepare the dental hygiene student to practice the science of oral and maxillofacial radiology. The course will cover radiation physics, the mechanisms of x-ray generation, the effects of exposure factors on the x-ray beam, and the interactions of x-radiation and matter. Image production and intraoral image receptors (digital and film) are also considered with emphasis placed on identifying and correcting errors resulting from improper exposure and processing. Emphasis is placed on techniques of intraoral radiography and identification and correction of errors. Panoramic and other extraoral projections are discussed, followed by specialized radiographic procedures. Radiation biology and protective measures are presented, with quality assurance protocols discussed in the context of radiation dose reduction. The course concludes with identification of normal radiographic landmarks, the principles of radiographic interpretation, detection of dental caries, recognition of periapical diseases and common bony lesions, and infection control procedures.

DHY 8140 Strategies for Prevention of Oral Diseases

This course is designed to introduce concepts and strategies utilized in the promotion of oral health and prevention of oral diseases for the individual patient. It is comprised of three modules: the prevention of Hard Tissue Diseases, the prevention of Soft Tissue Diseases, and Behavioral Interventions. The course will culminate with the development of an individualized, comprehensive, dental hygiene care plan involving these strategies to meet the individualized needs of an identified patient.

DHY 8150 Dental Materials

This course is designed to introduce foundation knowledge in the area of material science for application in clinical dentistry. Materials used in dentistry (polymers, metals and ceramics, and composites), biocompatibility issues, properties and testing methodology will be presented in order for students to formulate strategies for materials selection. It will provide the student with a background to deal with the properties, manipulation and care of the materials used in the prevention and treatment of oral disease. This study will include the physical, mechanical, chemical, biological characteristics and biocompatibility issues of these materials. In addition, this course will study the clinical application of these dental materials and their relationship to the oral environment.

DHY 8190 Orthodontics

This course will introduce the student to basic orthodontic concepts. The student will be able to describe and classify dental malocclusions according to the Angle classification and skeletal malocclusions. The course will familiarize the student with clinical and radiographic interpretation of common pathologies often noted in the orthodontic patient. They will be introduced to current trends in orthodontics including orthodontics and TMJ, extraction vs non-extraction, early treatment and retention issues. Whenever possible these trends will be explored through actual treated and documented cases. Students will be familiar with the various parts of fixed orthodontic appliances as well as the most commonly used removable appliances. The students will be introduced to the challenges of treating patients with braces in a dental hygiene setting. A major focus will be proficiency in accurately charting the mixed dentition patient.

DHY 8210 Special Patient Care

This course is divided into two portions. Half of the course is designed to introduce students to issues relating to geriatric dental care and treatment considerations. Topics include health and wellness, issues in geriatric dentistry, oral changes in the older adult, physical assessment and pharmacological factors, oral health promotion for the older adult, mental diseases in the older adult, elder abuse and hospice care. The other half of the course is designed prepare the students for management of patients with systemic/medical conditions that may have dental implications. Covered will be a description of the disease or condition, incidence, prevalence, etiology, clinical manifestations, medical treatment, oral manifestations and dental management considerations.

The purpose of this course is to continue the student¿s exposure to the ethical and legal principles guiding the decision making and the practice of dental hygiene. Mechanism to assess personal and professional self assessment will be utilized along with discussion of suggested measures and/or support systems to improve recognized deficiencies. Students will prepare and present analyses of an ethical dilemma they have personally observed in their clinical experience. Working in groups, students, will be required to chose by random selection an ethical dilemma, resolve that dilemma utilizing the ethical decision making model and present that resolution to class in a video or DVD format.

DHY 8250 Radiographic Interpretation

This course prepares the dental hygiene student to interpret dental radiographic images to correctly identify normal radiographic landmarks on intra-oral and panoramic radiographs, developmental anomalies of the teeth, and common bony lesions. The student will also be prepared for the detection and radiographic classification of dental caries, recognition of periapical and periodontal diseases, and identification of dental restorative materials. It is the purpose of this course to develop the student¿s ability to think conceptually and to use problem-solving skills.

DHY 8300 Periodontal Therapy II

This course is designed to provide the student with information regarding the surgical aspects of the treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the consideration of pertinent systemic conditions, which may affect periodontal surgery. Topics covered in this course will include the rationale, indications and contraindications for various periodontal surgical procedures, treatment modalities including mucogingival surgery, treatment of bony defects, osseous grafting and periodontal tissue regeneration. The mechanisms and timing of healing of surgical sites, as well as post-surgical treatment will be presented. Current trends in periodontics will be emphasized, and the student will be helped to understand the relationships between the dental hygienist, general practitioner and the periodontal specialist. The student will understand the role of all health care providers in the management of periodontal disease.

This course will focus on the development of evidence-based decision making skills that are necessary to analyze, apply evidence, and provide a decision to a clinically-based question that is related to the management of dental hygiene care. Using a formalized EBDM process, students will increase their skills in the identification of a patient question, and in searching for and interpreting clinical and scientific evidence so that the clinical question can be answered with confidence. Students will each present a clinical case study using evidence-based references and resources to provide best interventions within the scope of dental hygiene practice.
