DHY 8300 Periodontal Therapy II

This course is designed to provide the student with information regarding the surgical aspects of the treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the consideration of pertinent systemic conditions, which may affect periodontal surgery. Topics covered in this course will include the rationale, indications and contraindications for various periodontal surgical procedures, treatment modalities including mucogingival surgery, treatment of bony defects, osseous grafting and periodontal tissue regeneration. The mechanisms and timing of healing of surgical sites, as well as post-surgical treatment will be presented. Current trends in periodontics will be emphasized, and the student will be helped to understand the relationships between the dental hygienist, general practitioner and the periodontal specialist.
