DHY 8190 Orthodontics

This course will introduce the student to basic orthodontic concepts. The student will be able to describe and classify dental malocclusions according to the Angle classification and skeletal malocclusions. The course will familiarize the student with clinical and radiographic interpretation of common pathologies often noted in the orthodontic patient. They will be introduced to current trends in orthodontics including orthodontics and TMJ, extraction vs non-extraction, early treatment and retention issues. Whenever possible these trends will be explored through actual treated and documented cases. Students will be familiar with the various parts of fixed orthodontic appliances as well as the most commonly used removable appliances. The students will be introduced to the challenges of treating patients with braces in a dental hygiene setting. A major focus will be proficiency in accurately charting the mixed dentition patient.
