Description

University of Detroit Mercy’s Education Department has a 5-Year Teacher Education Program for freshman students to provide quality teacher preparation for a successful and fulfilling professional career. This 5-year program will enable you to earn your undergraduate degree, certification from the State of Michigan and a master’s degree in a cohort setting. This convenient program saves you both time and dollars in reaching your education goals. The program is available to those interested in elementary or secondary teacher education.



Program Benefits

  • You will join a cohort of students in your freshman year who share your goal of becoming a teacher.
  • The cohort format makes efficient use of your time to reach your career goals.
  • You can select from a wide range of courses required for your major to earn either a BS or BA degree.
  • Your coursework in education and real in-school field experiences begin your freshman year.
  • You will have seamless movement from undergraduate to graduate coursework in your education sequence during senior year.
  • You have opportunities to obtain special grants and scholarships to assist you in acquiring your education.
  • You will be able to track clearly your coursework in acquiring a bachelor’s degree, certification and a master’s degree. Three advisors will assist you through the program from the areas of undergraduate education, your major area, and graduate school.
  • Your enrollment in a 5-year program enables you to begin graduate coursework during your senior year through “senior privilege” status, maximizing your undergraduate financial aid.


Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the University’s general entrance requirements. To be considered for the 5-Year Teacher Education Program, you must achieve:

  • a high school GPA of 3.0
  • a minimum ACT composite score of 22
  • a 3.25 Cumulative GPA average entering senior year

Education Tracks

Choose a Track:
As a student in the 5-Year Teacher Education Program, you can select from a variety of majors within the elementary and secondary education tracks.


Elementary Education Track

In the Elementary Education track, you can choose from four majors: math, integrated sciences, language arts or social sciences.

INTEGRATED SCIENCE CERTIFICATION MAJOR

  • Bachelor of Science: Biology
  • Bachelor of Science: Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Science: Biochemistry

The student will earn the above BA with certification to teach all subjects and Integrated Science in the K-5 and middle school setting, and a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction degree.

MATH MAJOR

  • Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics

The student will earn a BA in Mathematics with certification to teach all subjects and Math in the K-5 and middle school setting, and a Master in the Art of Teaching Mathematics degree.

SOCIAL STUDIES MAJOR

  • Bachelor of Arts: History Major
  • Bachelor of Arts: Political Science Major
  • Bachelor of Arts: Economic Major

The student will earn one of the above BA degrees with certification to teach all subjects and Social Studies in the K-5 and elementary setting, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum & Instruction.

LANGUAGE ARTS MAJOR

  • Bachelor of Arts: English Major

The student will earn a BA degree with certification to teach all subjects and Language Arts in the K-5 and middle school setting, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum & Instruction.


Secondary Education Track

In the Secondary Education track, you can choose from nine options:

  • Biology/Integrated Science with second major in Chemistry and Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
  • Chemistry with second major in Biology/Integrated Sciences and Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
  • Computer Science with second major in Mathematics and a Master of the Art of Teaching Mathematics
  • Economics with a second major in Social Studies and a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
  • English with second major in Learning Disabilities and a Master of Arts in Special Education
  • History with a second major in Social Studies and a Masters of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
  • Mathematics with a second major in Learning Disabilities and a Master of Arts in Special Education
  • Mathematics with a second major in Computer Science and a Master in the Art of Teaching Mathematics
  • Political Science with a second major in Social Studies and a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
