Mission

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, as a part of the continuing tradition of Catholic education, is committed to provide quality dental care to our patients and to serve as a source of information and education to the community. Through our dedication to excellence in teaching and research, the School of Dentistry strives to develop technically and diagnostically skilled, scientifically based, socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals who are committed to continued professional growth and development.

Goal

The intent of the program is to develop dentists who have a firm foundation in the scientific and biomedical sciences of modern dentistry. Graduating dentists are sensitive to the needs, values and attitudes of the individual patient and the community at large and possess a variety of technical skills for the delivery of patient care. This is accomplished by a structured, systematic approach in which biomedical, clinical and behavioral sciences provide the basis for the application of knowledge to patient care.

Information

All programs offered by the School of Dentistry are fully accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission of Dental Accreditation. The School is an acknowledged leader in dental education and provides an excellent clinical program for its students. Graduates are successful in completing both National Board I and National Board II as well as the Northeast Regional Board Examinations.

The School enjoys a diverse student and patient population. More than 96 percent of the full-time faculty have the terminal degree in their area of expertise. All specialty department chairs are board certified and practice their specialty. All faculty teaching in the clinic also practice dentistry.

The School of Dentistry admits 77 candidates into the dental program each year. Our specialty programs are highly competitive nationally. The Endodontic program alternates each year, accepting either two or three applicants. The Orthodontic program accepts five applicants annually.
