CNS 500 Research Methods in Counseling

This course provides the foundation for preparation of the Master’s thesis in Counseling. Historic and current research methods in counseling are examined and literature reviews are conducted. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of the methodology of research in counseling including selection of research methods, analysis and interpretation of data, and formulation of conclusions and generalizations. Students will complete a comprehensive literature review comprising the initial work towards the Thesis.

Current theory and practical approaches will be discussed, as well as, relevant research in the area of multicultural counseling.

This course provides students an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive assessment, utilizing the mental status exam and apply counseling theory to in-depth case analysis. Students will become familiar with the DSM-IV-TR as well as ethical issues associated with assessment and diagnosis. A presentation of case information is conducted with special emphasis on the relationship between assessment and treatment planning in counseling.

Course is comprised of the application of basic counseling skills in a laboratory setting. Students complete 100 hours of applied counseling with individuals and groups while under direct supervision by a clinical supervisor and a faculty member. Case conceptualization is utilized to present cases while faculty, clinical supervisors, and peers assess skill application.

Course is designed around the development and delivery of consulting services in school and community settings. Professional, clinical and ethical issues as well as staff development are discussed. An introduction to personnel-related crisis resolution is also explored. Consultation theory, roles and functions of counselors and supervisors in program and proposal development; organization, administration, and evaluation of services; conflict management; third party intervention; legal and ethical issues; public relations are also explored.

This course builds upon learning accomplished in CNS 500 through the application of research methods. Students engage in a specific research project in counseling using qualitative and/or quantitative methods resulting in the completion of a master’s research thesis.

Building upon prior curricular experiences in addictions counseling, this course provides an in-depth focus on the two broad areas of addiction, substance and process. Current research on etiology, assessment and treatment of addiction are discussed.

CNS 604 Internship in Counseling

Prerequisites:
Completion of minimum of 39 hrs and authorization of academic advisor.


The internship is the culmination of the program as the student has the opportunity to practice prior to program completion, under supervision, that particular aspect of his/her field that relates to his/her area of specialization: addictions, community, or school counseling. The internship is comprised of a total of 600 hours in a community organization or K-12 school.
