Biography

Tony DeGenaro is a lecturer in the Department of English, specializing in college writing, academic writing and creative writing. He received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English from Otterbein University in 2012 and a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from the University of San Francisco in 2014. DeGenaro is currently completing his Ph.D. in English with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition from Wayne State University, and is expected to defend his dissertation in August 2021, and graduate in December 2021. His research centers on finding intersections between composition and creative writing instruction, basic writing pedagogy and popular culture.

Previously, DeGenaro has been a Youth Arts instructor and Writer-in-Residence with InsideOut Literary Arts at Communication and Media Arts High School. He is an actively publishing and performing poet, his work most recently featured in the Wayne Literary Review and was awarded the Tompkins Poetry Award in 2020 for his manuscript, "Four Winds, a Fifth Song." Tony also publishes pop culture and music criticism at Pop Matters. He joined University of Detroit Mercy in 2021.
