Cindy Spires has worked to hone mission-based delivery of services in The Writing Center (TWC) through well-rounded professional development of staff both in terms of writing center pedagogy and in antiracism training. Since 2005, Spires has taught writing, literature and communications classes at the university and community-college level.

From 2016 to 2020, she served as TWC’s coordinator and expanded the center's services to include cross-campus partnerships with Detroit Mercy’s Dental Summer Enrichment Program, the Law School's Career Services Office and the Center for Career & Professional Development, to name a few.

Currently serving as director of The Writing Center, her primary goals include ensuring that students continue receiving quality writing consultations that fit with TWC's pedagogical approach and that staff receive quality professional development that makes them both career ready and lifelong advocates for antiracism.

Spires has been a certified yoga instructor since 2012 and barre teacher since 2020. She periodically offers yoga to employees and students in various ways. She is a member of the Science, Technology & Race Learning Community and the Provost's Antiracism Task Force and serves on other committees that aid the College of Liberal Arts & Education and the University's mission. Spires joined the University in 2016.
