Gary Lichtman joined the University in June, 1993, with a focus in media relations and external communications. Prior to Detroit Mercy, he headed up the media department for United Way for Southeastern Michigan and worked in the public relations industry coordinating internal and external communications for clients such as General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Embassy Suite Hotels, Whole Food Markets and the Detroit Zoo.

He attributes his career to former University professor, mentor and friend, Neal Shine, former publisher of the Detroit Free Press and a University of Detroit alum.  Lichtman began freelancing for the daily newspaper under Shine's guidance, and wrote for Observer & Eccentric newspapers and various other publications. Prior to graduation, he interned at WXYZ-TV  Channel 7 for a daily news/entertainment talk show “Kelly & Company” with hosts John Kelly and Marilyn Turner.  For three years, he organized and ran the Farmington Area Founders Festival with corporate sponsors, local businesses and talent and other non-profits fundraisers through Oakland County.

Lichtman has worked as an adjunct professor in the University’s Communication Studies department, teaching CST 300-Mass Media Ethics and helping students find radio, tv, print, public relations and advertising jobs, prior to and after graduation.
