Sept. 9, 2016 President Garibaldi shares his remarks regarding the Knight Foundation's Reimagining the Civic Commons Grant competition and recent $4 million initiative to revitalize the nearby Fitzgerald Neighborhood. “At the President's Convocation on Aug. 16, I indicated that after Labor Day a major announcement would be made about the Knight Foundation's Reimagining the Civic Commons Grant competition. This morning that announcement is being made in Philadelphia. And as you will see in the following local and national articles and press releases announcing Detroit as one of the four cities selected for this $8 million award, University of Detroit Mercy is a major partner in this initiative. The other three cities receiving a grant are Akron, Chicago and Memphis. The proposal process began in November 2015 and the funds will primarily be used to improve the Fitzgerald neighborhood west of the campus. As the City of Detroit, the University and our partners finalize the implementation plans, I will share them with you over the next few months. Aug. 9, 2016 Dr. Garibaldi welcomed close to 700 hundred teachers and other professional staff and administrators from the Archdiocese of Detroit Schools for their 3rd Annual K-12 Teacher and Administrators Conference. This year’s theme focused on “Cultivating Positive School Culture: Mission is the Key.” |

June 1-3, 2016 In a “coincidental meeting in the rain,” President Antoine M. Garibaldi bumped into Detroit Mercy nursing student Taylor Topolski while attending the Mackinac Policy Conference, June 1-3. Topolski commented on her experience as a Detroit Mercy student, saying, “Becoming a part of Detroit Mercy was the best decision I ever made. I am so proud of the person I have become at UDM and don't know who I would be at any other university. I look forward to fulfilling the mission of Detroit Mercy and cannot ask for a better college choice. Thank you for everything you do!” |
May 22, 2016 President Garibaldi spoke to about 40 Detroit-area high school students in the “Pathways to Excellence” (PTE) program, May 22. The PTE program is co-sponsored by Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity's Detroit Boule' and the Detroit Parent Network to promote the academic and social development of African American men in high school. This Saturday session at UDM was focused on how to choose a college. |

April 2, 2016 Approximately 40 student volunteers, including members of Residence Life Hall Council, Tri Sigma, Sigma Pi and student-athletes, participated in a service day, cleaning garbage and debris on the McNichols Campus south side as part of the Altruistic Campus Experience (ACE) project, April 2. President Antoine M. Garibaldi and some Facility staff also participated in the clean-up event. |
March 28, 2016 Members of the youth organization 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, a mentorship program dedicated to helping African-American youth achieve success in education, health, wellness and economic development, visited UDM's McNichols Campus, March 28. Director of Catholic Studies Simon Hendry, S.J., gave a short blessing and the entrance officially opened following the ceremony. |
