Jim Wallis
Jim Wallis

UDM presents an evening with Rev. Jim Wallis, best-selling author, theologian, speaker, preacher and international commentator on the intersection of religion and public life, faith and politics. Wallis gave his presentation, "Faith in the Public Square," Sept. 18 in Calihan Hall on UDM's McNichols Campus.

In this presentation, Wallis says, "God is personal, but never private," and addresses how is God public, especially around election time. He says that although choices on the ballot do not directly address the Kingdom of God, they do impact the "common good," and that people of faith should consider their history of social movements and realize they are in the "mountain moving business."

Wallis's latest book is The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith & Politics in a Post-Religious Right America. His previous book, God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It, was on the New York Times bestseller list for four months.

Bellah discussed how we can understand the presence of God in the midst of a highly secular society, analyzing the social and cultural forces that make it difficult to experience that presence, and addressing the contribution of a Catholic imagination to helping to resolve the difficulty.

In December 2000, Bellah received the United States National Humanities Medal from President Clinton. The award cited Bellah's efforts to "illuminate the importance of community in American society. A distinguished sociologist and educator, he has raised our awareness of the values that are at the core of our democratic institutions and of the dangers of individualism unchecked by social responsibility."

For more on Bellah at UDM, see the news release.
