First Board of Advisors meeting helps define direction for School
The School of Architecture held its first Dean's Advisory Board meeting, Oct. 17. The board members were invited by Architecture Dean Stephen Vogel to serve as a sounding board for current and proposed programs and activities, to propose ways to expand the School's resources and public awareness, and to assist in the recruitment and retention of students.

It is hoped that board members will also provide co-op placements, internships and employment opportunities for students, and help foster communication with Architecture alumni.
Membership includes 19 Architecture alumni and other professionals from the community. Some initiatives of the board may include work with curriculum design, student mentoring and consultation to the dean on strategic planning for the School.

The board had an ambitious agenda for this first meeting. Following a State of the University address by UDM President Gerard Stockhausen, S.J., Dean Vogel provided an introduction to the School. The group then discussed proposed new academic programs in Interior Architecture, Landscape Urbanism and Design and Build.
Following lunch, Dale Morgan and Norman Silk, new owners of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Turkel House, talked about the home's complex restoration to its original condition.
"This first meeting provided just the kind of open discussion and idea generation I had hoped for from this group of professionals. Their expertise and input are invaluable," says Vogel.
After finalizing the board's direction for the year to come, the second half of the meeting comprised a number of opportunities for the board members to interact with students and learn about their projects and other activities. Faculty members and students presented a project from their Vertical Studio. The day concluded with a reception with students.
