Detroit Collaborative Design Center news 

The Detroit Collaborative Design Center team designed and built the St. Joseph Recovery Center, a mall-like enclosure for use as a homeless shelter after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, seen below under construction.

Due to the project's success, a second phase of the project is now under way. As a result of its creative design, the project was recognized with several awards:

  • the Detroit AIA Honor Award for Building Design,
  • the New Orleans Honor Award for Building Design, and
  • the AIA Gulf States Honor Award, which will be presented at the National AIA meeting in Boston, May 15-17.

Book cover

Jennifer Masengarb '96, wrote The Architecture Handbook: A Student Guide to Understanding Buildings, (pictured at right) published by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Published in August 2007, the book is the first high school architecture textbook in the country and is now being used in 35 states in the U.S. For more information on the book, visit archhandbook.org.

James Timberlake '74, of Kiernan Timberlake Associates in Philadelphia, won the AIA National Award as 2008 Firm of the Year.

Robert Ziegelman of Luckenbach Ziegelman Architects served as a guide for a group of students (including UDM Architecture students) from AIAS to view an exhibit of the work of Eero Saarinen at the Cranbrook Art Museum.
